Ok, I had a post last week about my 1998 Honda Passport but I thought I would start a new thread because I had different problems going on that were giving 2 different kinds of problems that I thought were all related but ney were'nt.
Now the symptoms are, It will try to stall, it acts like it is going to stall and just before it does it will rev back up almost like I was giving it gas but I never touch the peddel once it revs back up it acts fine for a few seconds then does it again then after a few times of this it will finally stall even if I am moving.
So all I have to do is stick it in nutrel and it will fire back up as I am coasting down the road I will get about a block or so and it will start all over. I notice that when ever it starts to act up if I pull over put it in park and rev it up I get wacky rpms. If I just barly touch the gas I will get like 3000 rpms and it will stay there for 5 seconds or better and then start to come down just like I was holding the pedal on 3000 rpms for 5 seconds then letting off.
The other thing is I can't keep it at a steady rpm it is like real touchy. These things are directly realted to the stalling because once in a while it will come out of it and run just perferct like there is no problem in the world. I am going to check the intake manifold tonight but I don't think that is going to be it.
It sorta seems like a different problem. But I am open for all suggestions.
Thanks in advanced for all your help. This board is priceless.
Edit by Mod: PLEASE!! use some paragraphs in your posts. It is downright painful to read without them.

Could it be the idle air control valve? There is a check in the manual that says unplug and the idle should drop immediately. I started it up and it did not do anything. Do you have to wait for engine to get up to operating temp and then unplug? If not maybe I found the problem.

Do check your intake manifiold gaskets.
But I did replace my IAC valve last year after experiencing similar symptoms. Start it up revs up to 3-5 grand and scares the poop out of you.
I got a great deal on e-bay for like 25 buck on an auction that no one else bid on. and its 5 minutes to swap it out.
You can also check it with a multi-meter. I don't have my book with me to know what its supposed to read though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
when looking for a container to hold drained brake fluid, find a container that is different from the beverage you are currently consuming.

yup, I am going to say IAC as well. had mine go on me last year, same symtoms, even blew some dark smoke out the exhaust once with it that way. it wasnt expensive at all from advance auto, and only took a few minutes to replace, and after that, you gotta drive the truck for a bit to "teach" it to work right for you.

well I just wanted to follow up and let everyone no it seemed to be the IAC causing all the trouble. I put a new one in drove it for awhile and it ran great. The thing that is wierd though is when you unplug it the idle stays the same and the haynes manual says it will lower the idle. As long as it runs fine I don't care though. Thanks again for all your help.

If it stayed the same, then I could safely say that the IAC is NOT working. You were running off of minimum air the entire time.
