Loosing any coolant? Mine did that right before the head gasket went. Also a sign of a sticky vac or centrif advance in the dizzy. How is the power?

You'll need to follow the advise above, but you should start running higher octane gas too. At about 75,000 miles, my NA engine started pinging exactly as yours is. I checked timing and replaced dist. cap, rotor, plugs and wires to no avail.
Finally, someone suggested I fill-up with 93 octane gas. Never pinged a ping after that unless I went back to 87.
87 Montero, bought new, by me - 88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine- with awesome audio.

I have a Ford Asspire lol, that also pings unless I use 93octane. I checked the timing but can't rely on that because someone may have changed the timing belt and was off a few teeth. As long as I use high test, it's fine. Better power too for a 1.3L. They may have advanced the timing for that reason. Little thing has no hp stock. I figure they squeezed out some more by advancing the timimg.
1987 Dodge Raider rebuilt Quest block bored .040 over put together, and installed by Shelby. 5spd, '87 stock turbo, Intercooled, 2.5" exhaust. MPI with hard pipes, FIP Pro-4, MSextra MS1
