Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've wrapped my brain about as far around this as I can - time to throw it out there and see if anyone has some suggestions.

My 1990 22RE is idling super high. Occasionally kicking the accelerator will make it drop down to normal, but not very often. I've checked that the accelerator cable isn't sticking, I've pulled the throttle body off and cleaned everything and re-adjusted the TPS (as per 4crawler's writeup), I've adjusted the idle screw on the throttle body -- nothing seems to help.

Ideas anyone? What should I be looking at next? Vacuum leak? AFM?

Thanks,

Matt

I don't think so. I've checked that the throttle valve is fully closed (it's pressed up against the stop screw) at idle. I also checked the dashpot when I cleaned the throttle body and it seems to be working fine.

I just noticed that the FSM mentions an auxilary air valve attached to the bottom of the throttle body. What does that do and could it be the source of my woes?

Adds air for fast idle when engine is cold.

My '85 does that from time to time, probably as a result of the Rube Goldberg throttle linkage on the early 22REs. I recently swapped out the throttle return spring for a heavier one and so far have not had any sticking throttle. Time will tell if this is a permanent fix or not.

Yeah, but mine does it ALL the time. It's not that much of an issue, I guess, but I feel pretty silly sitting at a stop light with my engine racing at 3000rpms. And it can't be good for my gas mileage.

Also, it idles that high even when I know that the throttle is fully closed - I can visually see that the throttle arm is up against the stop screw. So there must be something else that's gone screwy and is supplying the extra air to make the engine race. But what???

Try disconnecting all the VSVs that bump up the idle speed, like for the A/C and the power steering (if present). Maybe one of those is acting up. Also, try turning down the idle up air valve knob all the way or turn it in when you get a high idle speed and see if it affects the speed at all.

I'm with 4crawler..if you have 100% verified that your butterfly is closed, you start looking at things that could leak air.. Maybe start pulling lines off the plenum one at a time and capping them.

Argh...

I could have sworn up and down that I was sure the butterfly was 100% closed --- but it turns out it wasn't. The DP screw was set just a little too hight so the throttle spring couldn't overcome the DP spring and would cause it to open the throttle just slightly...

Silly me. Just goes to show - when it doesn't make sense, check it all again.

Lol, yeah I just replaced a throttle body because the set screw flange was busted off...I was looking all over the place for the solution to a similar problem. You're good to go now?

What part of Portland are you from? I just moved to Olympia from Newberg...
