Getting the Wheeling Fever
(I searched). I'm need a transmission cooler installed and my tech suggested getting one designed to fit the T100 as much as possible. Hayden seems to be the most popular. I need it for highway/mountain driving, not towing (yet). I've I bother to install one, it may as well have the most cooling potential I can get. What models have you installed with ease. Also, where do you get/put the guage?

Don't fret the 'fit.' Buy a quality brand unit and just use barbed hose fittings to splice it into the factory lines. I put mine on in 1996 and never looked back. Mine sticks in front of the factory radiator/condensor held in place with nylon thru ties. [I am not in favor of the horizontal installs on frame crossmembers - you want ram air flowing head on to and thru the cooler fins.]

Just cut the rubber hose that feeds the ATF from trans to radiator, put in 3/8" hose-to-hose barbs and add tubing to the cooler and back. I added an in-line filter kit using full size oil filter; adds ~1 qt extra ATF system capacity as a bonus to external pan filtration.

I did not install a gauge but with the same method you could splice one in. Where is the factory ATF idiot light temp sender? Can you swap that out for an aftermarket sensor/gauge?

Body Damage is Cool
Im using the hayden cooler, put it in front of the condenser as well, using an autometer trans temp gauge, with the sender mouted in the pan...

perma cool makes a temp gauge that can be plumbed in, and you can get a dash pod from somewhere...

cant remember where I got the dash pod though.

Could you expand on "in the pan"? Did you need to drill and tap an new hole, use the drain plug, and existing access point???

bought the weld in bung and drilled/welded it into the driver side towards the back of the pan, im using a pillar pod for the trans temp guage as well, used a z-series guage, which is the same series the TRD boost guage comes in to closely match the rest of the instruments.

Go to you local big box auto supplier - autozone, whatever - and buy the largest unit you can get and plumb it in. Don't sweat load ratings and all that stuff. The bigger the cooler radiator, the bigger the tubing, the better. Cool is good - go for max cooling. Manufacturer does not matter in reality. They are all the same except for racing aplications.

I'd definitely go with a stacked plate tranmission cooler versus the framerail type with fins. This is a stacked plate one similar to the one I purchased...

It is B&M brand and I got it for a decent price from Summit Racing. It is identical to the TRD one, but at a fraction of the price (I think I paid $70). The exact model number is here. You may check out this thread for more discussion of the subject.

Do a search for tranny cooler in the T100 forum and you'll find lots of info. Basically, the stacked plates are the best application versus the frame rail type, however both get positive results.

Joel
