Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey everyone hopefully someone can help me. I took my Monty into the shop for a 4 wheel alignment. As they went through it I needed some work (ball joint, repacking etc) cool no problem. They had to order parts so I took the Monty up to Lake Tahoe for some fun. While driving on Sat I smelled my brake pads burning then noticed my front end was pulling left I got out and it had heated up the rotor and the pads were really smokin. I was gingerly driving back to the Hotel and was going to call AAA for a tow when it stopped grabbing and ran fine. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
When I got back to town I took it to the shop, they called me later and asked about my brakes. They said the rotors needed replacing and the caliper on the Drivers side was frozen onto the rotor. Yikes. So I got the quote for the work and said go ahead and get it done. I don't have the time or place to work now that we've moved. Anyway they call me up today and said the hub is frozen on and they cant find a tool to get it loose. The Allen wrenches they have are either to small or to large, so they don't know what to do. The Hub is stuck and they cant seem to free it. Any thoughts or advice I should pass on to these guys? Anything would be helpful.
Thanks,
D

Once you get the hub apart, if antything is destroyed or unsatifactory, I have some off and easily ready to go if needed.

I don't mean to make light of your circumstances, but it sounds like the shop isn't very professional. I don't remember what size allen wrenches are needed for hub removal, but they are standard metric sizes that come with any good tool set. Your advice to the shop should be for them to go buy the right tool at any auto parts store.

There is a special tool needed for hub nut removal, but many have used a standard 3/4 ton Chevy hub nut socket with all but 2 of the teeth ground off. If they're missing this tool, they should be able to make one quickly using a bench grinder. I think that's the correct Chevy description... someone should verify that, though.

While the hubs/rotors are off and separated is a good time to inspect/replace the needle bearing inside each hub and inspect/replace each hub seal.

Good luck,
Frank

I have never had a shop say "We cant help you, we dont have the right tool". Are you going to a country garage where these guys know only how to fix Chevs and Fords? Most shops that need a certain tool can usually get that tool sent to them immediately by their suppliers or they go to the local auto parts store and get it.

This is a chance for them to charge you extra as they had to source out a really rare Allen key ... actually where is the shop? I will fedex 2 or 3 of them right now !
