it's not all the same thing, but not contradictory either.
the API Grade SF refers to the AmericanPetroleum Institute spec for that service category.
the 5W30 refers to the oil viscosity.
here's a good primer on it all from the API
API MOTOR OIL GUIDE pdf

if i didn't scan through it too quickly, the SF is obsolete and the current spec you will find on oil is SM, for example.

But oil classifications superceed each other. So SM covers all the requirements for SF.

Just go buy some 5W-30 and be done with it.

I have a 1988 Trooper II Workshop Manual from Isuzu and this is what it says about the Manual Transmission and Transfer Case: In areas where ambient temperatures of 32 degrees C. (90 degrees F) and higher are regularly encountered, use SAE40. Other areas use SAE5W-30SF

If I can't fix it, it ain't broke.

exactly ! er, well not exactly. according to that api sheet, (and i *tend* to give them some credence on oil issues...) according to api
SJ is current, For 2001 and older automotive engines
SL is current, For 2004 and older automotive engines

and as you point out SM is current and supercedes For all automotive engines currently in use.

so in the case of SJ and SL at least, all oil classifications *haven't* necessarily superceded each other.

in anycase, the original poster was confused about, and asked for information about, what he thought were different recommendations in his manual, i.e. whether the recommendations for Grade and Viscosity were contradictory or the same thing. it would seem that getting the real info from the horses *mouth* was a good thing, and thus the link.

or actually *learn* something from the expert on oil designations (api) since they are the ones designating them.

[[ i know it can be fun with these flip remarks, but it can also be rather tiresome sometimes, too. ]]

Superceed may not have been the best choice of wording. Retroactive? How about "Each subsequent classification meets the requirements for all previous classifications"?

Therefore: SM covers everything before it. As does the SL and SJ classifications. They cover all classifications that came BEFORE them. In some sense, they do supercede, but...maybe "replace" would be a better term.

In this case, all of those classifications cover SF and even beyond that, there is nothing on the shelf of your local auto store that will not cover SF. Heck, I doubt you could find anything rated lower than SJ, or even if you can find SJ. Small, hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop stores are excluded from this.: <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

As for being flip, that was not my intent. Regardless of the search for information and the discussion of rather minor minutia, common sense must be considered. The bottom line is we are working with a transmission that is 20 years old. Any 5W30, fluid bought today will fit the bill.

To further put this discussion in some perspective, the API certifications are for engines. Not transmissions. Oils used in a transmission require much less additives and stabilizers than when they are used in engines. In the case of the Isuzu transmissions, viscosity becomes much more important than anything else because of the need of oil to reach some of the farthest bearings. That is why gear oil kills MUA5s dead.

So, I'll say it again, with less flip: Just go buy some 5w-30 and be done with it.

What about using Red Line MTL? I have an 84 4 spd, and a 91 5 spd, plus I have an 87 5 spd sitting in a parts car that someday will either go in the 84 or in my LUV 4x4. Anyone have experience or issues with using the MTL in any of these trannys?
