Drivers side stub axle. It didn't want to go back into the diff tube so I started "tapping" it with Mr. Smashy. Didn't seem to work. Took the axle out and I'm not sure if it was like this before or if my tapping caused it.

Can I sand down the ridges and re-install, or should I go and get a new axle?

personaly, i won't worry about it. just sand the end smooth & make sure it goes in smoothly next time you tap it in. I don't think the end of the axle serve any purpose anyway, just make sure your splines are in good condition though...

I agree, should be fine, just file the splines at the ends so it will fit in the spider gears.... I find that if I rotate the driveline slightly when installing the front axle shafts, it helps line it all up.

i would cheak for bent axle and or axle housing. happened to my buddy, had a bent axle and axle tube, prolly from stump jumping it at the dunes and up the logging trails. it came out easy and well never went back in, and yes Mr.smashy was happy when put away that day.
