The site appears to be down right now, but I got mine from e-winches.com. They offer free shipping on all winches I went with the Mile Maker S9500. I think I payed $399 shipped. This model appears to be upgraded from the one you posted. It seems to be much faster than the PE8000, and it comes with 3/8" cable and a roler fairlead. I've used it about 6 times, and never had any problems with it. I realized after I got it, that the 12000lb model is the same size, and same cable, with a lower gear for $10 more It does seem to be a bit bigger overall than the older model, and I had to grind down the feet a bit to fit it in my DOR bumper. I had a question about winches. The trooper only weighs 2000-2500lbs. If an ATV winch is rated at 3500 straight pull. WHy wouldn't that be enough? ANd you could get a block and tackle and double your output if you needed more. Just wondering why you would get a 9500lb winch for a 2000lb vehicle?

The trooper only weighs 2000-2500lbs. I think that you're under estimating the weight of a Trooper. You are looking at more like 3500-4000 loaded for the trail. The general rule for winches is 1.5-2x the vehicle weight. The reason being that when it's good and stuck, the truck can act much heavier than it's actual weight. Andre

Lucas Bill Vista's Recovery Bible See the chart on calculating winch loads...a 4000 lb vehicle can get very much heavier...I don't think a 10000 lb winch (and appropriate shackles, clevises, etc.) is at all overkill. This is why I don't have a winch: I can't afford a good one, and I don't want to kill myself or someone else with an insufficient one.

Yeah I can see that. But what stops you from using a 3500lb winch with a block and tackle? That doubles the output and if since you will have either a tow strap or the like handy the distance shouldn't be a big deal either. I am only pushing the issue because I would like a winch but can't see forking over $300-1000 when I can get away with $150-200. Just my 2 cents

Lucas Very good point...speed I guess? If you have to use pullies to multiply leverage, you trade speed for force (or is it power..or work...forgetting basic physics here).

Very good point...speed I guess? If you have to use pullies to multiply leverage, you trade speed for force (or is it power..or work...forgetting basic physics here). Yes... speed is the tradeoff. You double the pulling power but halve the speed. This is because you now must take in twice as much cable to go the same distance. If you've watched Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel, there was an episode where during a military training exercise he recovered a stuck humvee with nothing more than an elaborate block and tackle and people power (no winches). Sure it took forever to rig and moving was slow going, but its possible. In theory, your idea may work, but in practice, its a really bad idea. in addition, the 2000-3000lbs atv winchs are always short drum... meaning, you got half as much cable as a normal winch but you're using twice as much for the same distance (w/ your block and tackle). You won't have any effect winching range with such a setup. What good is a 5' pull to an object only 20' in front of you? -Rob

Well most of the ATV winches I have seen are around 35-50ft of cable. So you have around 15-25 feet of pulling length with a snatch block. That is the whole length of the trooper which should be enough to get you out of most situations. I also carry a 25ft tow strap so I should be able to reach something to grab onto. I have used a hi-lift jack to winch out once at 4 ft at a time and that is why I want a electric winch even if its 20ft and slow. But as I look more and more I am finding better deals so I may yet get a 5000-6000lb winch.

That is the whole length of the trooper which should be enough to get you out of most situations. Are you kidding? rarely is a suitable winch anchor 25' in front of my vehicle (and I live in the wooded east) and rarely would 25' of line get me out of a situation in one pull. Sure, I could make it happen if I had to, but this is way less than ideal. There's a reason most fullsize winchs came with 80'-150' cable for single line pulls. you're saying a 1/4 of that is more than adequet... Do yourself a favor, if you really think you can hack it with one of these smaller winches, grab yourself a come-a-long (hand crank winch) and try some extractions. These will have about the same amount of cable, same speed, and same pulling power as what you propose. Report back to us your experience. I've done this before, and wouldn't want to spend $200-300 to do it again. When I buy a winch, I want it to do the work, do it fast, and do it without a lot of complication. yes, I know winches aren't cheap, but this is something you don't want to skimp on. If you're gonna get a winch, make your money count, save a little longer, and get a real winch... you'll pay more in the long run while you block the trail burning out the motor in your little ATV utility winch. you'll thank us later. -Rob
