Getting the Wheeling Fever
My electric choke is going to be the death of me.
It simply refuses to work. When I took my carb apart, I didn't pay real good attention to that part of the carb, hindsight is always 20/20 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I've tried hooking the spring/coil up every way possible and it absolutely refuses to work, it's just wide open at this point.

I can't rotate the choke housing either. There is a little notch in it which lines up with a little notch where it bolts to the carburetor, so I can't rotate it.

I think I might just go to a manual choke, anything automati is just another thing to fail. Any suggestions for such?

Thanks

Well, that notch is doing it's job - it's not supposed to rotate.

It sounds more like the problem is in the linkage than the choke itself.

If you can take some close up pictures of the linkage, I may be able to see how things are supposed to be.

I'd love to take some up close pics of the linkage, but I can't figure out how to post pictures on this forum.

In scerb's carb FAQ he said that you should be able to rotate the choke housing: http://www.bluebassdesign.com/boonin/carb_faq/

Emm.. there's this thing called a FAQ at the top here--that's for formatting your pictures, which also have to be webhosted.

hmm. Are you referring to the notch right on top of the housing/carb? This is just a guideline, when I adjusted my choke at one point the notches were 60* off (my coil was pretty much toast). Does your carb have screws or pop-rivets? All you should need to do to rotate the housing is loosen the 3 screws, if you have rivets then you gotta drill them out.

If you are having trouble putting the housing back on (it can get tricky) think of it like this: the housing is going to contract when it warms up. Hook it up so that this contracting will open the choke plate. Once you're that far, you just rotate the housing (eveythings gotta be cold for this) until its mostly closed (about 1/8th inch open). This way the choke plate will slowly open as the engine warms up.

Dunno if that helps or not, but I'm not quite sure why your housing wont rotate. Try to elaborate on that and then once that moves adjusting is pretty easy.

Honestly Scerb, this is where I have to disagree with you.

On the choke housing there is a notch, and on the top mount point on the carb closest to the engine there is a protrusion that is supposed to catch that notch to make sure they choke housing only goes on one way. Every time I tried adjusting mine before, I'd either get it cold starting great, but not engaging on anything other than cold starts (loose), or warm starting great, but way too tight on cold starts (tight). Only when the notch and bump align (factory setting) have I gotten any sort of satisfactory results. On my rebuilt carb, the bump was nearly gone, and I can see how it would be easy to overlook, but I'm pretty sure the factory rivets it on because it's only supposed to go on one way. If I still had my parts carb around, I'd take pictures.

That's just what my experience has been, though.

You could be 100% correct. Its very possible that all the carbs I've worked on have been so old that the notch has worn off - I know i've never noticed it. It has been almost two years since I've been inside the choke housing too.

So it sounds as though this notch is still in place on this carb. If thats the case then the choke plate linkage is probably not hooked up correctly, which is indeed what Stock87 originally said. Look at my previous post to try and understand how to get the linkage right.
