Hey, I've got an 04 Tacoma 4wd regular cab with a manual tranny. She's got 24k miles on it and it seems that I nearly ALWAYS have a rough shift into second, if I'm not careful. It shifts smoothly into second if I take my time and massage it into the box, but if I just shift without thinking, I always get a rough shift. Not really a grind, but it's almost like the synchronizer isn't allowing the smooth transition. Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to have the dealer have a look at it before the warranty runs out?

If you double-clutch the shift, is it any different? Test this carefully and out of traffic pls

From what I can tell, if I pause when shifting, the shift is smooth. But, if I come straight from 1st to 2nd, the shift is rough. I'll test the double clutch, to see if that makes a difference.

I was told a few months ago to try some synchromesh additive in the tranny. I haven't gotten around to this, but that may be my next step.

The 'stick' guys here have recommended using Redline Gear Lub to help with this. I just test-drove a 2.7l with a 5-spd manual and didn't have this experience...

So is this a common phenomenon with the 5 speed trannys? Mine's always done it, and obviously it isn't hurting the transmission, but it doesn't seem like quality performance. If I pay that much for a quality truck, I'd like the tranny to shift smoothly!

Redline, Amsoil, etc. synthetic gear lube is supposed to be the hot ticket for Toy manuals.

I changed the lube (dino lube) every 6K in my 98 4Runner and it seemed that the fresh fluid sure made the trans a lot smoother.

+1 for doing your own maintenance. I'd hate to have to pay for someone else to do my tranny fluid every 6k <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> esp at Dallas prices (dunno where you are). I think they get $85 / pop plus disposal plus tax most places.

Does anyone know what the capacity is for fluid in the manual tranny for an 04 4cyl 4x4?
