I was searching for info on the 929 Extra Heavy Duty coils I found on Indy 4x. Didn't come up with anything, only got info on what I already know about the 912s.

My current setup is OME 912s w/ 2in spacers. Im getting new Rancho shocks and thought Id upgrade the springs while Im down there since I think they are now sagging a bit.

What is the difference in length (lift) between the 3 coils mentioned above? Also if I have adjustable shocks do I need to worry about "too stiff" a spring?

Will my Rancho 9179s be okay w/ the 929 coils?

TIA!

Hi Ashby, see my answers below:

912s are the shortest and softest. 919 are a little longer and a little stiffer. I had 919 on the Rodeo. I've not had a 929. Even 919 was a little bit too much for a Rodeo, I suppose 929 will be too uncomfortable.

I have one objection against the 919 coils: with 2" spacers, they provide TOO MUCH lift. The Rodeo stock rear driveshaft is vibrating with this configuration when coasting. 919+1" is OK, and 912+2" is OK, but 919+2" is the combination when the stock rear driveshaft begins vibrating.

it's difficult to compensate the spring stiffness with softer shocks. The ride will be tricky.

Ashby, according to my measurements, 99179s are way too short for the 912/2" setup. You have about 6" uptravel and only 2" downtravel. The shocks are in a very bad position.

There is a better option, longer shocks. I used the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 model (around 1995 year) Rancho application. This application is better, and these shocks are for sale now (very little used). With them, you have about 3" downtravel. They are also stronger.

I do not know how it is applicable in your case - you do not have the flexible links. But still your shocks are overextended in the neutral position.

Currently, I found the best rear application for the rear 2 gen Rodeo / Axiom. This is Toyota LC 80 OME shocks, softer application. They are very long uncompressed and very short (relatively) compressed. The technology is really impressive if you compare them side-by-side to Ranchos. With 912/2", I am riding the rear shocks almost exactly in the middle position: I have about 5-5.5" uptravel and 5-5.5" downtravel. My 912 coils are not dropping out in the extended position. The ride is very good and is better controllable than with Ranchos in any stiffness position.

Best regards.

Wifes Rodeo has 912's she loves them,I have 929 in mine(tow alot and generally haul ton's of crap in mine)they are stiffer than 912's but,I like them.

Lift was about the same with both set's.

In all reality there is not a big difference in ride quality, since that is mostly determined by the shock.

hope this helps.

BTW, Ashby, when I last time saw your rig, you had 1" spacers. Are you sure about 2" spacers ? If you have only 1", then the 919s will definitely be OK.

From my understanding the 9179s were the right length for 2-3inches on lift. Thats all Im going for. The reason I have spacers in my current 912s is becasue they are sagging.

I would only be doing springs and saving the spacers for later. I think I will be getting the 929s as I do tow w/ the Rodeo often.

Thanks.
