Having had bad experiences with the abs on my 99 trooper, I want to pull the fuse and rely on my own braking decisions. How do I turn off the annoying warning light on the dash without pulling the entire dash apart? The trick of tape over the light won't work.

Since the ABS warning light is just that, a warning light for when something is wrong with the ABS. Just turning it off is not an option. If you just can't live with it, you are going to have to pull the dash apart and remove the bulb.
Good Luck, Michael

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I'll wait until I have to get in there for something more important.

Something you might consider is cutting the wire or remove the pin/socket from the appropriate connector. If you have access to the electrical wiring diagrams you can locate the offending connection point.
Good luck!

Good luck! I don't suppose "removing the bulb" ever crossed your mind...

As someone who has been the lucky owner of vehicles that had previous owners (POs), please just pull the bulb. Cutting wires, especially for something as silly as turning off a bulb, is just not a good idea. It makes people who might own your vehicle in the future very frustrated and less than "happy" when they try and decipher the PO's electrical creativity. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Here is another idea: Fix the ABS.
Good Luck, Michael

I don't want to fix the abs. It is not broken. I don't like the pulsing action and just don't want to use the abs. I also don't want to stare at the glowing light either. In the dirt, particularly on downhill situations, the abs reduces or eliminates the braking "feel", making it difficult to control the vehicle. I like the idea of finding the circuit it is on and disabling it at that point. I don't think dismantling the dash assembly just to turn off a lamp is worth the effort.
Thanks for the idea and I will consider my question answered.

Roll Me Over

Here is my thought on the subject.
My ABS was less than desirable, then I heard about the recall and went to get the ABS reprogrammmed. They told me I had a rear speed sensor bad and it would cost $$$. So I pulled my ABS fuse.
About a year of looking at the light was enough and I cut the purple wire with the white stripe going to the gauge cluster. (98 Rodeo) This is the wire going to the ABS light for the Rodeo.
Now one other thing you need to know. The ABS pump will not work properly now as you would expect. Think of it like your power steering belt breaking and now you are trying to steer anyway.
I am going to use a old proportioning valve off an older trooper that has two inputs and front and a rear and then it has two outputs for the front brakes and one for the rear. This has the correct fittings and everything to be able to remove your ABS pump completely.
Tad already did this on his 94 Trooper and said it made a big difference in his braking performance.
I've always felt my brakes on my 98 (even when it was stock and only had 9000 miles on it) were less than desirable for 4 wheel disc brakes.

Henry........... +1 I too find threshold braking far superior to the ABS system on my 2000 Rodeo. Since I am the primary driver to this vehicle its not much of an issue and in the event someone else needs to drive it (usualy for only a few miles) I make sure they are aware of it). The light on mine has been on for the past 6 years. I also have the ISC warning light on too. Stuff like that it easy for me to ignore. Good luck!
