Getting the Wheeling Fever
I recently replaced my started motor with a re-manufactured one from Toy.
My Toy manual identifies 1.0 Kw and 1.4 Kw versions. I can detect no markings on the physical starter indicating which version it is.
Since 4x4s sometimes have a heavier duty application I asked Toy about this when I purchased mine. Their reply was that most applications took the 1.0 Kw version and that the 1.4 Kw version was for cold application, like for example Canada.
Since my recently installed 1.0 Kw version seemed like it had about 90% of the vigor of the one I removed, it started me to wonder.
Any comments out there to put my wondering to rest?

I dunno. I noticed the reman I bought from Toyota seemed less powerful as well. Works ok though.

I know from over on the T100 forum that the T100's came with 1.2, 1.4, and 1.8kw starters, FWIW, and its pretty tough to tell which one you have unless you compare part numbers.

Actually, from what I've been able to tell, automatics got the 1.4, since they have to spin the torque converter, and a slightly heavier duty alternator too.

I've done some part cross-referencing, and it seems like all autos got the 1.4kW starter, and autos from the years around 1989-91 got 70amp (vs. the usual 60/65) alternators.

Another good reason to try and repair the starter you have rather than take a chance on a re-man unit:

I always sold the 1.4 when I worked for Toyota.I was told it depended on the area you live in.If it's a cold climate or not.If you have the original starter the part number should be on the sticker if you can read it.It will start with a 28100-xxxxx.

Note my location; I stick with the 1.4kw I think it just does a better job of tossin' that flywheel when everything has been cold soaked.

Both the 1.0 and 1.4 are available anywhere; after that it's a price preference.
