Getting the Wheeling Fever
hey, i just got an 88 4runner with the v6.
it has new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter.
i also took out the cat and stock muffler and replaced that with a 2" test pipe and flowmaster.

the truck is stock otherwise.

under normal street and some highway driving i'm still only getting like 12-14 mpg... is that normal or should i be getting more?

thanks in advanced!!!!

other than changing the fuel filter(fuel lines look rough so i will need to replace them as well), and maybe sea foaming it, what could i try to get it better?

what is the optimal shifting range? i have been shifting around 2-2500K...

I shift at 3500-4k usually. That should help a bit. You could have a bad sensor or tired o2. Are you getting any CELs?

I got 20 mpg all summer long with my 88 V6 and I shift around 2500 rpm's. Clean your throttle body and even clean the air flow meter for starters. What size tires are on the truck? If they are larger than stock then you need to compensate for the difference in your odometer readings. My mileage does drop off a little in the colder weather due to higher idle but you're still pretty low.

31's are larger than your stock tires, so you'll want to compensate for that.

My 88 (35's, 5.29's) gets a solid 15-17. My old 94 got 14-18 w/ 33's and 4.88's. My 93 xcab with 4.56's and 33's got 18-21.

In the winter i get 50-70 less kilometers per tank (450+ vs 400) Big tires dont help either.

The 31" tires will account for another 10.71 miles/100, since the 31's are 10.75% bigger than the stock 28's. A lazy O2 sensor will acount for about a 1-2 mpg loss, they get lazy with age and wont trtigger a code. If you replace the O2 sensor replace it with an oem one, or one that is a direct plkug in one. The universal ones have to be spliced in, and if the wires aren't the exact same length, the ecu can register a false code.

i also took out the cat and stock muffler and replaced that with a 2" test pipe and flowmaster.
This wil also account for a 2-3 mpg loss. Contrary to popular belief an open exhaust isn't always the best thing, especially for the Toyota engine, there isn't gobs of HP being choked off by the oem exhaust. After rebuilding my '90 3.0 with headers and a highflow cat and open muffler I easily lost 3mpgs, I was getting about 13-14 combined when before the exhaust I would get right at 17. I replaced the highflow muff with a 3 chamber turbo and regained the lost mpg's. An open exhaust takes away the low end torque of these engines, which is where a lot of fuel economy is lost. If your not launching at the 3500rpms, or are constantly cruising above 90mph, I would suggest installing a new cat either a standard or a hi-flow one from magnaflow, this should help to build some back pressure which is needed(some) for these engines.

I would think that the '88 5-spd w/a 3.0 in good working order should get around 21 highway and about 15-17 city, depending on the driver. Your 12-14 is about what 2nd gen 3.0 Runners w/auto tranny get.

i gained milage when i replaced my exhaust and intake. when i first got the truck, i was getting about 225 miles per tank. when i replaced the intake with my K&n, it jumped up to about 275, then settled down to 250. then i replaced my exhaust. its a doug thorley cat back, with a glass pack muffler. before i replaced it, i was getting around 250 miles per tank which is about 15 mpg. as soon as i replaced it, it went up to about 300-325, which is about 19 mpg. also, i have LT 235/75 R15's on my truck, and its supposed to have 31's. how much milage do you think im losing through this?
