How fast have you R &R'd a 20/22R?

Here's my prob: Got an '80 4X4 that someone put an '85 22R in. It's got a oil/water mix problem, bad compression, unknown milage, and Lord knows what else wrong <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. I happen to have a rebuilt 20R I was going to sell. Decided to swap. I'll then know what I have for an engine, and the truck will be configured correctly. Question: How many hours has it taken you to swap engines? I'll be workin by myself, and will probably have to remove the 33s to kneel it low enough for my jack/garage. Thanks.

couple hours in and out .. if everything is ready to go .
then you'll have to do some "fartin" around .. the 20R carb. (choke) is coolant activated , you'll have to do some plumbing . maybe .. 20R was stock in your truck , so who knows what they did on the 22r ???

There isnt much to swapping those engines. The little stuff will take the longest.

if the engine is ready to go, and i've got the right tools at my disposal, it's a saturday afternoon type of affair. what takes the longest(especially on a 22RE) is getting all the wiring and hoses routed. my 22R on the other hand is mostly self contained, hook up the fuel line, plug in the igniter and alternator and it's ready to run.

Took me 4 hours to pull it. It's in bad shape. Clutch plate's got worn "fingertips", rusted, and missing a 12mm mounting bolt, but dry (no engine/tranny leaks-Big Deal <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />). Head/block joint looks all corroded, and it's only been 4 months since mounted <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />! Gonna clean up the flywheel & get it turned tomorrow. Now to see what all 22R plumbing/accessories will swap and those that won't. I think the block's backplate will, along with the PS, alt, smog pump, fan w/pully, motor mounts & belt tensioner. Gonna need an 20R aircleaner, and hopefully the headder will fit. Any other ideas/advice?

Before you remove your engine, which you are planning to break down, loosen the crank pulley bolt first! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> x 2 MANY TIMES OVER. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> To add, if the engine is still operational, to drain the antifreeze and run some antifreeze flush thru there with the heater turned ON, so it descales the core and plumbing as well, THEN start tearing it down. That way it's not going back together with fresh 'freeze in a gunked-up system.
