Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I managed to find some used old style long-fields. When I assembled my solid front I was unaware the the axle shafts had to be mar-tacked so I just threw in new retainer clips. I was informed that they should be mar-tacked after I had finished the axle... D'oh! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> The snap ring supposedly can break and get caught up in the bearings.

Pro's and Con's! I really don't want to disassemble my axle again, but I don't want to blow up a birf either. Any wisdom to be shared? Experience with this?

If you've already got the snap ring in there, leave it and run it. Main reason for Mar-Tack is ease of replacing birfs/axle shafts on the trail. Then you don't need to deal with pulling the 2 apart, and getting the birf back on with that clip inside the birf.
I would tack them next time it's apart.

I thought the reason to mar-tack, was to prevent the axle from walking into the carrier?

I tacked, 88toy did not, both of us running Longfields (the old, welded variety). I thought I had heard that Bobby strongly recommended against using the clips instead of tacking, for reliability reasons?

Could be wrong, been so before.
