Is the back light replaceable in these units? I have it off the car, and it is not clear that the unit can be taken apart safely.

once you take the compass unit out of the pod assembly, there are two holes at top one on each side. use flat tip screw driver to unscrew the light bulbs from back of unit. screw in new light bulbs from dealer. they are like 3 bucks each.

Two?
On my compass there is one small bulb at the 2:00 position looking at the front of the unit, then a more normal bulb that lights the Oil Pressure, and Amp guage. I don't see a 2ed bulb for the compass. I have taken the gauge set as apart as it will go.
Thanks for all the help.

well unless there are slightly different kinds of compasses, mine had two bulbs, one at the 2 o clock position and one at the 10 o clock position, both were identical.

It looks my rig is a couple of years older than yours, and I think the 95 was the first for the compass, so I am not surprised the compass is not very bright in my rig, I suspect they figured out they needed more light than one bulb gives.
Thanks for the help guys.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a baseline 92 Montero, and it didnt orginally come with the extra set of gauges, so i bought some off ebay. Where the guauges go is just some thin plastic, i cut a hole there looking for a wire harness, but had no luck. I wouldve figured even the baseline would have the wiring, any tips on locating that harness, or what needs to be done to hook these up??

My '92 has one "inner" bulb for the compass, there are "outer" bulbs for the other gauges, maybe that's where some the confusion is coming from. You have to disassembly the unit much more to access the inner bulb that lights up the compass. I have a spare compass bulb at home, still in the Mitsubishi parts bag, I'll get the # and post it for you once I get home. I bought 2 when my bulb went out earlier this year, you never know when a part is going out of production

Hey Robb. I did the same thing a few years ago. I ended up re-selling the cluster on Ebay after there were no wires to be found inside my dash. I still have the hole in my dash where thought I'd connect it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
