I am having an issue with my 90 model monty(3.0 V6) that I am hoping someone can help with. I am not getting fire to the spark plugs. I have traced the problem to the coil. It has power going to it but for some reason it will not let power through it. I replaced it with anthor one only to have the same result. Any ideas?

That stupid little black box next to the coil will stop fire even if the coil is good. Happened to me.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

The stupid little black box is called the "power transistor". <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> It's the switch that unloads the coil to provide spark at the plug tips.

The ecu controls the spark. What do the codes read? The search function will lead you to the procedure. These ecu's have a habit of dying from capacitor failure, and the cap juice leakage eats the pc board and you're dead in the water. Fishy smell in ecu is a diagnostic. Lots of ecu rebuilders if damamge is not bad.

This may be stupid, but i have seen it. Make sure the wire going from the coil to the distributor is making good contact.

And the dizzy plug to the wiring harness. The dizzy guts tell the ecu the data it needs to compute advance and fire the coil.

Smells very fishy in the ecu! Anyone have an extra one that they would sell?

Do a search on "ecu repair" and you should get several places that rebuild them, and maybe some that sell them outright, but the core charge may kill you. Also search "capacitors" and I think you'll find a thread that shows what the caps look like and what the leak looks like, and how much damage is repairable.
