Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Fellow Trooper owners,
My new '93 unfortunately does not have a hitch, and I have to put one on. I will not be towing anything heavy, just a very small boat trailer, total weight (loaded) about 500 lbs. Where are the places I should be looking to purchase the hardware?
Can a hitch be installed at home? Does it require welding or heavy drilling? Is there a convenient place to tap the wiring for light connection?
THANKS!

For a Trooper I recommend the Hidden Hitch brand. The crossbar tucks up behind the bumper, very clean look. You can install yourself, pretty easy.
For wiring by far the easiest is to get a Hoppy wiring harness, it will plug-n-play into the pre-existing connector on the Trooper, which can be found behind a large rubber plug up under the drivers side rear fender. You have to lay on the ground to see it, just pull out the plug and the connector will come with it.

NO MATTER WHAT YOU MAY BE TOWING ,DON,T BUY A CHEAP HITCH , YOU MAY WANT TO LATER TOW SOEMTHING BIGGER AND HEAVIER AND THE LITTLE 1 1/4 INCH HITCHES WONT CUT IT , BUT YOURSELF A GOOD FRAME MOUNTED HITCH WITH A 2 INCH RECEIVER AND YOU CAN CAN USE ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT ATACHMENTS, NOT JUST A TRAILER HITCH, AND PARTS FOR THE 2 IN STUFF YOU CAN BUY ABOUT ANYWHERE , AND YES THEY DO ALL BOLT ON , THERE ARE PREDRILLED SPOTS AND THREADED SPOTS ON THE TROOPER FRAME, AND YES IT IS ALLREADY PREWIRED , LOOK UP ABOVE THE LEFT REAR EXHAUST HANGER WHERE THE TAIL PIPE EXITS AND YOU SHOULD SEE A SMALL BLACK RUBBER PLUG STUCK IN THE BODY PANEL ,PULL THE PLUG AND THE FACTORY WIRING HARNESS IS ATTACHED JUST INSIDE THE HOLE, AND YOU CAN BUY A PREWIRED HARNESS THAT IS ALLREADY WIRED TO THE LITTLE 4 WIRE TAILITE ADAPTER READY TO PLUG INTO A SMALL TRAILER . A GOOD HITCH WILL PROB RUN IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 120.00 WITH ALL THE HARDWARE AND SOME OF THEM EVEN COME WITH THE HITCH RECEIVER AND BALL ,JERRY
