R&R'd the junk 22R with a spare 20R and ran it for the 1st time today on my project '80 4X4 Longbed. Fantastic. Never had a rebuild like this before. Even the distributor was found to be on 8 DTDC! Yeah it was stiff at first: new pistons and all. But even the valves are quiet. WOW!! I almost sold that engine last summer ! You can always tell a non-pro mech huh? Anyway, you guys have helped me many times here. Thanks so much! Just one other request (for now): Anyone have a 20R air cleaner & canister they wanna sell? 1980 with smog pump inlets would be great, but could probably fabricate if not. Thanks again.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

my brother had an '80 celica when we were both teenagers... it had a 20R and that thing was like a sports car on steroids! ok - so we were young and inexperienced in cars back then - but it hauled ass pretty good and was reliable, except for the carb. No one where we lived new how to tame it.
Unfortunately, being young and stupid, my brother blew the clutch doing some sort of 60mph 3rd to 1st manuever and decided to rebuild the engine for some more power... never hapenned and the car ended up being junked (where were you 15 years ago?). It was replaced with an early eighties dodge daytona. ALL QUALITY THERE!
Great work on the truck... many years ahead.
