Well as I know little about conversions, not sure if it's a bolt on or not and it really didn't matter to me, but it was the 2.5 originally. As for the original trooper, next time I talk to him I'll ask. Not a problem, just was wanting to know for future knowledge of possibly wanting to convert a gas S10 or S15 down the road. I know 82-85 S-Series trucks came with the 1.9 Isuzu four cylinder and I can almost bet the 2.2 diesel would bolt in on one of those factory trucks. Now whether it would in a 2.5 truck I'm really not sure. Thanks and let me know what you find out on the 87 Trooper and if the diesel conversion was a bolt-in on your truck. Did you go to isuzupup.com too?

turboDIESELtrooper The 1982-85 S10/S15 DID come with the 2.2 engine in them. I know this motor will fit in a 1991 S15, as I have done it. The one thing I am not sure of is whether the Pup oil pan will fit in the S-series, as there is little room between the front cross member and the pan as it is. Certainly an older S engine will fit a newer (up to 1993 at least) S and bolt right in place, using the diesel motor mounts, which look very similar to the 4 cyl gas mounts.
Just my 2ó worth.

Zach, thanks for the helpful info and reply. I was basically getting at does the 2.2 diesel bolt in to an older S10 or S15 with a gas 4 cylinder or even the 2.8 V6? I may be looking into a conversion down the road and would like to get an 84-88 S-series truck to put it into. Seems like it would be a pretty straightforward job too. Anyone have a factory diesel S10 or S15 I could get under the hood parts from or know of where one is in a junkyard? Thanks.

My truck originally had a 4.3L gasser auto, and I removed that to install a motor from an older diesel S10, along with the diesel transmission. The original 4 cyl gasser transmission will work with the diesel, but you need the bell-housing from the diesel transmission to bolt to the gas transmission. Or, you can just use the diesel transmission, as it is basically the same as the gas transmission, other than gear ratios and bellhousing. My truck is a 1991, and it fit in just fine. I think it should fit in up to a 1993 model. I'd love to know if the front frame is the same in the newer series of truck, cause thenit shoud fit there too. My Sonoma comes with more sound-deadening material, so it is good with the diesel, which is noisier and shakier than any gas engine. Does this help answer your question any better?

Zach, yes that does answer some of my questions. My main concern is trying to get an S10 or S15 that will allow for the 2.2 diesel to bolt right in on the frame. What I was thinking about doing was trying to find an 82-85 S10/S15 with the optioned 1.9 gas engine/manual trans to put the diesel into. Reason why is that 1.9 is an Isuzu engine, so given that I would think the 2.2 diesel would go right in (due to the Isuzu-Isuzu relationship). But that way my search ability is not going to be many trucks as the 1.9 trucks aren't as common as the 2.5 4 cylinder and 2.8 V6 models. What I really would like to know is if the diesel bolts in to a factory 2.5 or 2.8 V6 truck. If so I could broaden the range of trucks I find that will be suitable for the diesel conversion. And I do know about the diesel transmission to gas transmission differences, given the S10/S15 used the T5 tranny will special diesel bellhousing. Your help up until now has been great and I appreciate your reply.

As fas as I know, the frames were all the same in the front engine area from 1984 to 1993, or first generation S10/S15, vs. Luv. The frames from behind the front doors would vary between the various cab and box designs. I don't know about the Luv frame. Engine wise, the oil pan would be my concern, as I don't know if the oil pan in the Luv is the same as the S10. So the frames were the same in the S10/S15, whether it had a 4 or 6 cyl. Mine had a 6 in it, and underneath the motor mounts were holes for the 4 cyl mounts, which also fit the diesel mounts. The motors were adapted to fit the truck, basically.
The engine should phyically fit in there no problem. The engine won't go in or out with the transmission connected. You will have to do custom things, like adapting the wiring harness to work - easy, cause you-re using less of them compared to the gasser - and other minor details. Typical swap thing. Oh, I think I had to move the cross-member under the transmission back to the next set of holes, from the auto to the manaul.
Does this help? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
