on reassembly of the birf's. i know to pack the ***** out of the joint it self. Do i pack the inner cee with grease too? How much grease goes into the knuckle itself, and around the outside of the inner cee? BTW axle is all apart and waiting on my SAS kit to be ordered and shipped. Then its time to gear the 3rd to 5.29's and put axle together with all new bearings seals, etc

I do not put the amount of grease that the FSM calls for. I pack the Birfs by filling the center hole where the axle goes and shoving the short side axle in, I keep repeating this until the grease is pushing out all the way around on the outside of the cage where the balls. I then wipe a thin coating of grease on the outside of the bell on the Birf and the axle shaft to lube the bronze bushing in the spindle and on the inside of the bell on the axle housing Before I put the knuckle on I pack the trunion bearings real good. Why do I not put the amount of grease the FSM calls for, that is how to service them for 50-100 thousand miles. I am into my axle a couple of times a year and if you every blow a Birf on the trail it is a huge mess. Here is a link to the FSM for an 85 on servicing the axle. http://www.lukemiller.org/toys/1985_toyota_4wd_front_axle_FSM.pdf

From what i gathered, I will fully back the birfield joint, fully pack the knuckle bearings, and lube up the outer shaft that is inside the spindle. The reason for my asking is i seen the plug hole in the knuckle for grease, but i didn't think that whole knuckle had to be FULL of grease. Thanks OOP's for the info. Can you give me heads up on reassembly of this axle, Tricks maybe? i kept all my shims assorted as to what knuckle they came from and there location. DO you think upon reassembly I will be fine using the same shims and not have problems? Please educate me a little more, I want to know this axle inside and out...

Here is another question i have for you guys. My axle i bought had the auto hubs on it. well i did get toyota aisin hubs for pretty cheap to do the swap. My question is, I had a bolt that held the axleshfat like on my current IFS setup. Will i have to get a c-Clip for the end of the Stub Shaft or can I use the same retaining bolt in the axle?
