Body Damage is Cool
Hey guys I just noticed that I have no power steering on my big trooper(89 2.8L v6)

How do I know if its the pump, or the gear box?
Thanks...

If the power steering goes out, is it normaly the pump?
If the pump was good, and the box was bad, would it still feel like it has no power steering??

I'm thinking its the pump, but not sure.

Does the pump have fluid in it? Secondly, is the pump locked up? I assume not, but that'd be a sign of the pump being the culprit. Thirdly, you can check the pump itself by disconnecting the discharge hose and placing it into a container and starting the engine to see if it's pumping or not.

I highly doubt it's the box unless it's leaking like a sieve, but it might be. Not sure how you'd check that one though.

2:33 in the morning, I've been working all day on this I had one problem after another....Just got the new pump on and its not the pump <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> It still doesn't work well. You can tell the pump is tring to turn the tires but can't.

I do have a steering stabilizer, I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with it, but its cold and its a oil filled shock.

Has anybody had simular problems??

Only thoughts that I have are if the seal(s) internally let go. That'd be the only thing that I can think of why it'd be the box. I would think that anything other than that would render the box useless and you wouldn't be able to steer at all.

Have you checked the hoses? Maybe they've deteriorated to the point where it's not holding the pressures it should. Maybe on the pressure side, the hose is ballooning just enough to not let the pressure build to what it should be? Maybe the return line is collapsing and the pump isn't getting fluid back fast enough? Just some thoughts ...

CHRIS WHEN YOU HAD THE PUMP OFF THE ENG, AND REFILLED THE RESERVOIR , DID IT MAKE A GURGLING SOUNDS AS IT WAS REFILLING THE SYSTEM , I HAVE NEVER SAW A STEERING BOX JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN GO BAD , IF THE BOX AND PUMP WAS WORKING CORRECTLY YOU COULD BREAK THE STEERING STABELIZER CLEAN OFF , THAT BOX AND PUMP HAS A LOT OF PUSHING FORCE ,
TRY THIS GET A PAN UNDER THE TRUCK OR YOU WILL MAKE A MESS , PULL THE RETURN LINE FROM THE RESV, AND DRAIN IT DOWN AS MUCH A YOU CAN, NOW PUT IT BACK ON THE NIPPLE AND START THE ENG IT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY START FILLING THE RESV WITH THE FLUID THAT IS LEFT IN THE SYSTEM BEING PUMPED BACK INTO THE RESV, AND AT THE SAME TIME MAKE A PRETTY NOTICEABLE GURGLING SOUND ,,IF IT DOESN'T YOU STILL HAVE A BAD PUMP, ALLSO DID YOU NOTICE ON THE FRONT OF THE PUMP WHEN YOU FIRST INSTALLED IT DID IT HAVE THE SERRATED INPUT SHAFT OR A KEYED SHAFT , SOMETIMES THE KEYS WILL FALLOUT INSTALLING THE PULLEY , IF IT HAS THE SERRATED SHAFT CHECK THE PULLEY CAREFULLY THEY WERE NOTORIOUS FOR STRIPING OUT THE SERRATIONS AND THE PUMP WILL TRY AND WORK, BUT SLIP ON THE SHAFT, ALL THE LATER PUMPS HAVE THE KEYWAY SETUP. ,, JERRY

Hi Jerry. I have a Gm pump(2.8) if that makes any difference. You can hear the pump tring to work.
You know when your at full lock you can normaly hear the pump. Well it sounds like that all of the time now.

A few weeks ago I ajusted the steering box.
after a few times driving it, it started doing this.
What could happen if it was ajusted too much???
