In my 86 trooper. Every time I let off the gas and press down again I get a jarring like the joints are loose and it is taking up the slack in them. I checked them all and they all seem to be tight and greased. Is this a common problem with 86 troopers or something I shoudl worry about possibly in the diff case itself??
thanks

I once got similar symptoms from loose u-bolts on the spring packs.

You might take a look at the hangers for the muffler/tailpipe assy.

It may have some slack in the bushings attached to the hangers and when the throttle is applied, (or released) torque is multiplied along the length of the exhaust system. And (it may) resonate as jarring like feel. Or not. YMMV

They guys have given you several things to look at. Now it is time for you to crawl under there and take a good look. Recheck those u-joints. Pull off the drive shaft and check for play (radial and in/out) in the pinion. It may be time to drain the tranny or rear end to see if there are chunks.
Remember, you are working with a 20-some year old truck. Things loosen up over time and while nothing maybe "loose" the additive effect of all the wiggles will make for some strange behavior.
Just to check, this is something under normal driving conditions, right? You aren't accelerating, letting off and then stabbing the gas, right? I can get any vehicle to lurch or jar by building up slack in the cost side of the entire drive train and then flooring it.
Good Luck, Michael

Alright. This weekend I crawled under there. Tightened all the axle bolts(none were loose) Changed the rear diff fluid and tranny fluid.(dirty but full) greased all the places I could grease underneath. And checked for play in the shafts (very little)
THen I took it off the blocks and sure enough the majority of the jarring went away. Now it only does it if I lay off and then jam the accelerator which happens on any vehicle.
thanks
Lucas
