Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey Jeepete, I cant wait to get the video from mile marker, but isn't the new hydraulic expensive? it sounds like it might be. I agree with you though if the military is useing it it must be the best on the market you'd hope for there sake. And is definetly worth looking into. Another idea what is the military doing with all those winches? Maybe can pick up one for cheap?

Body Damage is Cool
Google is your friend when pricing Winches. I can only guess what the military did with all those Warns. My guess would be they are in a Warehouse somewhere waiting for someone to decide what to do with them. If they haven't moved they will end up in an auction or pallet sale on some base somewhere. All winches have advantages and disadvantages. A hydraulic winch will only work as long the engine is running if it works off a PS pump like most. One could conceivably rig an electric driven hydraulic pump for emergency use and overcome that disadvantage. Their other big disadvantage (if you feel the need for speed) is they are very slow compared to the faster electric winches. Some people, especially rock crawlers, feel fast line speed is essential. They often use the winch while driving to get over obstacles. As the Rig gets traction and moves ahead, fast no-load speed helps keeps them from over-running the cable. It's a dangerous practice for various reason but a very common one. They can't see how the cable is spooling and need a spotter to watch it. The spotter is in danger if he has a good view of the winch because the Rig may loose traction while the cable is slack and slip back, jerking on the cable with many times more force than it can take, this is bad news whether anyone is watching or not. The possibilities are endless. As I said before, no matter what kind of winch you have or what kind wheeling you do, Winching may be very hazardous to life and limb to anyone in the vicinity.
