Getting the Wheeling Fever
hi all,
i recently noticed a squeaking or creaking noise coming from my '87 yj steering wheel or the top of the colmun whenever i make a turn. it doesn't sound major just annoying.

is there something that needs replacing or a shot of wd40?

Body Damage is Cool
There is a bearing between the steering shaft and the steering column under the upper part of the steering column cover. That bearing is normally greased, and the grease usually lasts a lifetime. Sometimes a bushing is used instead of a bearing.

Getting to the bearing is a real PITA. Y0u must first remove the horn button, steering wheel and shaft nut with a puller, then remove the turn signal switch, etc. That's just to get to the bearing.

I'd make sure that the problem was with a dried out bearing, and not something else rubbing. If it is the bearing, I'd just try shooting it with WD-40, or one of those semi-liquid greases that come in an aerosol can and a tube you can put on the can. Don't overdue it.

Actually, if it's the bearing and there is no excess play in the steering shaft, and unless you're a perfectionist, I'd just let it go. Turn the radio up louder! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

ANYTHING but wd-40! There are a hundred pressurized lubericants out there that WILL lubricate.. wd-40 is a protecterant and not much of a lubricant at all. It dries and leaves varnish where you do NOT want more varnish.
