Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hopefully someone can help me out. I have an 87 raider 4x4 with manual trans and it is federal emis not high altitude. I have been driving this thing for 2 years now with carb problems, IE wouldnt idle smooth and cuts out at about 3100 RPM`s or higher with loss of power. I can barely go 55-60 on a flat surface. Anyway i just replaced the carb with a brand new oem and it idles great but i still have the power loss problem. I double checked all the vacuum lines and replaced so far the coil, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, 02 sensor, removed cat, checked for air leaks and still no good. Another problem is when i checked the timing and it is reading 15-20 deg advanced at idle warm and the distributor is turned as far as i can get it to go. If i go the other way with it, it will just advance more. Any help would be appreciated. Also i want to say what a great forum as i just read about 30 posts for the last 5 hours. any help would be appreciated.

I have a feeling the vacuum advance on the dizzy is not working properly. Or the dizzy was inserted into the head one gear off.
While your at it check the...

I changed the fuel pump and the filter already. I think the timing thing is definately an issue for me. What is the best way to isolate my timing problems without throwing more parts at it?

I just replaced this carb with a brand new OEM 32-35DIDEF carb and am thinking about doing away with all this vacuum stuff and going with a weber kit. Do the emissions allow me to do this if it is 20 or more years old? Does any car 20+ years old not have to be smogged? Kinda frustrated!

Or the dizzy was inserted into the head one gear off. Sounds like this is the case. 15-20 degrees is pretty far up there, even for high altitude. In New Mexico, it should be sitting at about 11-12 degrees. I'm at over 6300 feet and my timing is about 11 degrees. At sea level, it should be around 7 degrees.

If you just replaced the carb there's no sense throwing another carb at it if you still have the same problem as before. Do the emissions allow me to do this if it is 20 or more years old? Does any car 20+ years old not have to be smogged? Don't know about New Mexico's requirements. You'd have to check with your local DMV. According to Bernalillo County Aircare, all vehicles manufactured in 1975 and newer are required to be tested (if commuting in Bernalillo County). Vehicles 1975 - 1986 require testing every year.

Good link. Thanks. Looks like i will try and get this thing working right stock and check out the timing tommorow. If i did go with the weber does anyone know what kit # to get for the 87 raider with a feedback carb?

Bear in mind that if you do have emissions requirements, the word around the board is that you will not pass emissions with a Weber carb.

I do not seem to see people having problems with the fusible links coming from the battery. I have replaced mine three times over the years. My Monti when two years old did what yours is doing, I tried everything and then did a turbo conversion. It still lost power climbing a hill! I then discovered one of the three wires in the fusible link that brings power to the ignition was bad causing a low voltage at the coil. Solved the issue. If I recall it is the green wire in the link set at the battery.
