Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ive got a question on an engine that Im rebuilding. I bought it for a song so I cant complain about its condition. It came complete, manifold to manifold. But, the prev owner said he hydrolocked it. Id have to say he wasnt lying. 3 of the rods were bent and the #4 cylinder wall was gouged pretty good.
It looks to me that the gouge is low enough on the wall that the rings wont come close to contacting it.
Whaddya think? Is this block still servicable(without a bank loan)? Im not sure if i should bother taking it to a shop. My original plan was to get it tanked, bored and decked. Then a full EB kit. This discovery kinda put the brakes on things.
Thanks for your input fellas.
JT

Wow.
I'm no expert, but even though that gouge is scary deep, it looks like its below the area of the cylinder that is swept by the rings. If thats the only 'abnormal' wear, i.e. the rest of the cylider walls are ok, I would think the block is ok.
I'm pretty sure you need some new rods, tho. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Any machinist woudl give you a quick opinion and tell you if its salvageable.

Good luck with it!

X3 on WOW.
I'd like to know how in the world one could even get a gouge like that. It's like there must have been something big inside, but underneath the block, above the oil pan and crank. What kind of shape was the crank in?

Aoh and that #3 rod is hilarious.

That gouge is from the rod slamming on the cylinder wall. The bend in the #3 rod was so severe that it couldnt be pulled through the top of the block.

But even with all the carnage the cylinder walls all look pristene. Heck, the main & rod bearings were in good condition and unspun.

When you suck in an uncompressable fluid (WATER)through the intake somethings gotta give.

I think im going to frame the #3 rod. or maybe a hood ornament. Better yet gold plate it and hang it around my neck for some original bling.

Without v blocks and a mic I cant tell if the crank is damaged. It looks fine but only a shop will be able to tell for sure.

Hopefully next week Ill be able to drop this thing off at the shop.

Thanks
JT
