 87 xtra cab headlight wiring harness

Recently I read an article about replacing the wiring harness and in some cases after this change you get better performance from your headlights. Is this because the factory harness gauge is too small causing voltage drop. If this is the case would it be worth while making your own harness with heavier gauge wire or just buy a new harness.
