Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
hello all,
I am in the process of replacing my front wheel bearings, but for the life of me I can't seem to get the bearing races out of the hub. I have tried pounding them out with no luck and i have also tried a slid hammer w/ reverse claw on the end with no luck. I thought about using a heat gun, but was concerned that I might heat it up to much and warp the hub. Any ideas on how to get the races out of the hub?
Thanks Chris

Those hubs get Super hot due to braking, so I don't think you could hurt them with a heat gun.
Get a punch, and punch them out from opposing sides.

WELL, you're not hitting them hard enough, or your hammer is the wrong size, OR the piece you're hitting is not secured properly.
Hammer, and a brass drift OUGHT to be enough to get them out.

You can bring them somewhere and get them pressed out.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

hit on them from the inner side, the fat part of the race. Each race goes out it's side of the hub.

IIRC, there might be an edge inside the spindle which can be mistaken for the bearing race if you're not careful. I seem to remember denting it the first time I attempted this procedure. Tap (pound) the bearing race out using a triangular pattern for strike points. That should knock them loose pretty easily.

All I needed was a bigger hammer they almost jumped out by themselves, j/k. Heated them up a bit and it took a lot of ponding, but they came out.
thanks for comments and help.
