I did a quick search but didn't find what I was looking for.
I know that we are supposed to use the correct grease for the correct application, but which grease goes where and why?
From my quick research I have concluded:
Moly grease is so named because it contains molybdenum disulfate which helps reduce friction. Moly grease is usually grey or black in color.
Lithium grease sounds very vague. "The term Lithium Grease can be slightly misleading as the lithium content is actually the thickener used to thicken the oil content to make it a grease as opposed to an oil." From what I have seen these tend to be colored red or green.
So where on my Runner requires the added protection of Moly and why not just use moly everywhere..? After all moly grease does contain lithium as a thickening agent anyway..?
Thanx,nj

I've been using moly grease on all the driveshaft fittings... The diagram below shows specificly where the moly is called for.. on sliding joints such as the double cardan and the slide yokes..

As far as I've ever seen or read, the only place you'd use lithium grease is on your steering knuckles. The only lithium grease I've seen is white and apparently it does better in severe temp conditions than moly. But I use moly everywhere, all around, including the steering knuckles. I've had no (knock on wood) problems.

I use synthetic moly grease everywhere incl. steering knuckles. If it's good enough for wheel bearings/prop shafts, it's good enough elsewhere. No problems yet.

How about in the CV's? What are you supposed to pack the boots with? I used some high temp red lithium grease, but i didn't remove the old grease first. Will i have trouble or did I do good?

Bought a rebuild kit (boots and grease) from one of the el cheapo mass market auto parts store.. and CV's starting popping and binding from the crappy grease ... Parked it right away, tore it down and rebuilt using dealer supplied kit, and no further problems.. This was on a Subaru.
I could see some minor spalling where the junk grease just wasn't doing the job.. CV grease seems to be some really special stuff given the sliding contact and heavy loading inside a CV. [ February 11, 2003, 02:26 PM: Message edited by: Dandeman ]
