My altenator just gave up and a rebuilt is going for $265 Canadian. Does anyone know if alts in 88,89 etc camrys, celica are 60 amps. The only difference I see when I went to the wrecker was from 88 on they were serpentine pulleys and on some units the wire plug was oval. My 87 has a v-belt pulley and the plug is round. Question-can I just change pulleys aqround and in terms of the wiring can I change the wiring plug. I just want to get through winter and in the spring try to put in a large amp alt from a North American vehicle. Judging by past posts I'm not hearing good things about the Nippo Alts.

Canuck, if you've already got it out of the rig, tear it apart and take a look; replacement brushes are under $20; we might have the part number up in the sticky.

Alt Brush Replacement

The parts store can bench check it before you put it back in. Give that a try before you start jumpin' thru hoops.

Kewlynx, Aldready had the alt out and checked the brushs, All kinds of length and they wernt stuck. Put it back in and still "no good". Check all the wiring, fuse links etc. all checked out. I'm thinking the volt reg is probably pooched because with out opening it up I couldn't see any burning etc. Also checked continuity across the brush slip rings and that seemed OK. Didn't check the stator coil because I don't know what proper readings are. I'm just trying to get things going asap as I have to work outside and its -25c not counting the wind chill. I running two batteries right now and charging them overnight just to keep me mobile for going to work.

Solved my problem. Went to the wreckers (u-pull) and located I believe an89 or so Toyota van (what ever the model name is, I call them "Momma Taxi"). It had an identical looking altenator as in my 87 22re 4x4 except for the serpentine pulley. This van was loaded, AC, power this and that. Went to the yard office and on the computor determined the alt. was 100amp. Grabbed it along with the large amp fusible link. Went home changed pulleys installed it and it worked mint. Cost was $35 canadian plus $5 core. Probably translates to $25-30 US$ <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
