Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys,
I've been looking for a tilt column for my 1985 Jeep CJ. Will a 1987 and later YJ column fit? Looking at pictures, they appear to be the same, but I cannot really tell for sure.

Any ideas?

Mike

I cannot believe I have all of you stumped!

I'm still looking and trying to see if they are the same.
Thanks
Mike

Body Damage is Cool
The tilt column in my CJ7 is a standard GM column, so if YJs used the same thing, it should fit. I'm not sure if the lower steering shaft is the same length, though.

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

It's a standard GM column? But I suppose it is a shorter version, correct?
I have three of them in my shop out of mid 80's Chevy pickups.

I don't know that it's a shorter version. The steering column does not include the shaft (the lower steering shaft) that goes down to the steering gearbox. The column just goes through the dash and the firewall, and them stops several inches forward of the firewall.

So the same steering column could be used in a regular car or truck. I don't know if it is, but it could be. If you've got several columns lying around from Chevy trucks, measure them and see if they'll fit. You also will need to see if the female upper splines on your lower steering shaft will fit the male splines on the end of the steering column.

Like I said before, I don't know if the lower steering shaft will be the correct length. The OEM steering shafts did not have an adjustable length. You can get a new shaft that has adjustable length amd needle bearings in the u-joints from Borgeson, but they may cost more than you're willing to spend.

Interesting...if I get time tomorrow, I might stop down at the shop and check this out.
I'll post back what I figure out.
Thanks
Mike
