I recently replaced the plugs and they were way past due. However, that did not make a huge difference. I have Standard Load tires on the truck and the sidewalls are quite soft. I think that this may have something to do with it too. I am running 36psi and that is the max for these tires. I did not know that anyone made a standard load 265/75R-15 tire. Goodforayear does. The tires suck but they don't do bad in the rain and snow.

I should try some injector cleaner.

I recently remove my cap and put the tonnue cover on (this truck came with everything) and I will have to check the mileage again.

I am running 10w30 Mobil 1 (ususally use 5w but I had 5 quarts of 10w)
I have brand new 75w90 Mobil 1 in the trans, case and diffs.
I have no lift
I am fairly sure I have the 4.10 gears.

Ok, I'm checking out the 99 Tacoma today. I'm curious to see what the 4cyl. is like pulling out on to a highway. I've owned cars with 4cyl. and stick shift, but not a 4cyl.truck with auto trans.
As for better MPG and power, what about those K&N air filters? Has anyone tried them?

I've never noticed any gains with my K&N, I did notice having to clean the MAF sensor too frequently. Got sick of that, and sold the K&N on eBay.

Less restrictive means lets more junk through. Not sure how it could be done any other way.

Yeh- the MAF wires always were coated with filter oil and crud.

If you are thinking more power already and have not even driven it yet then get the bigger 3.4 engine. If you have to stomp the 2.7 to pull a boat chances are your milage will be better with a bigger motor when pulling.

From what I have heard, the different engines have comparable fuel economy. Although this depends on condition and other vehicle mods, I think that getting the 3.4 is better suited for your needs and would provide more advantages then disadvantages of having the V6.

Well, I took a look at the 99 Tacoma. It was at an auto repair shop, being sold by the shop for the original owner, a friend of the auto shops owner. It had no plates, so I couldn't drive it. The shop owner offered to put it on a lift so I could check it that way rather than go for a test drive. I insisted on a test drive, so some temporary plates may show up next week. All in all the truck was filthy inside, stained seats and carpet with dog hair everywhere. A painting contractor had owned it and there were white paint specs around the interior and outside on the lower rockers. There were no visable dents or rust spots. The digital odometer showed 79000 miles, and the engine seemed fairly clean with the typical corrosion on the aluminum parts. The engine started ok.The trans fluid looked a little brownish.Tires were fair except for the passenger side rear, which was very worn. The rear leaf springs seemed almost flat, not sure if this is normal for a Tacoma. I would think some arch is necessary. The asking price is $8,600.00. The shop owner was willing to deduct $200.00 so I could have it cleaned and detailed, but I'm not sure if $200.00 would cover the cost. If I decide to continue, I'll be able to drive it next week. Did I forget to mention that this Tacoma is an SR5 model? Since the interior is so foul, I'm wondering if mechanical maintenence has also been ignored. The original owner is nowhere to be found for questions.

You've got me thinking that the 3.4 may be the better choice. I'll see what's out there in my cheap price range.

x 2 on the 2.7 being easier to work on. The HP is the same as the 3.0 at 150 hp.

Mine's in a Runner, 5sp She can get up and go; rather cool considering that the Runner is heavier than a Taco.

Contractors beat the crap out of their trucks and pull long hours, so the chance of it being neglect is probable. BUT like I tell anyone buying a rig they can't get maintenance records for, GO THRU the rig and get it on your own schedule.

I'd offer them $7K or walk away. Methinks you can do better otherwise.
