just bought a new 48" cast/steel hi-lift i have noticed that you need to keep upward pressure and the lever that is used to engage the jack and disengage it in order for the jack to lift something...is this normal?

Spray it down with some WD-40!!!! Be careful, hi-lifts can kill or hurt you bad. I carry lengths of chain with hooks that I wrap around the frame and axle so I do not have to jack it up so high. That and my rig has so much flex that the hi-lift will not lift the wheels off the ground when all the way up.

When you set the lever to make it jack down, when it gets to where that is no load on it, it will then release and slide the rest of the way down the post.. That's normal....
I presume from your cast/steel description, that yours is a genuine HiLift company built jack.. Given how dangerous these things can be, I personally would not use any of the many knockoff unbranded versions around...
