Roll Me Over
quick history: my 4runner has a vibe in the rear at speeds of 65+. It's smooth as glass any speed below. It has a custom CV rear Dshaft that was locally made. Angles are perfect. I even had the rear tires shaved by a big rig shop.

Today I got tired of it, and figured I've done everything in the book, so I took the driveshaft to a different local Powertrain place. After the counter guys looked at it for a few seconds they already found some imperfections/issues with it. They're saying the CV is worn out, it shouldn't "fall" or flop around losely. and some other little thing. I'll find out tomorrow what the real deal is on it when they electronically ballance it and give me a recomendation on what to do. SO it looks like Driveshaft is most likely the cause of the vibe. Can't wait to hear what they say tomorrow after really working on it.

figured I'd post it up, being There have been a few members on here with similar vibration problems like myself.

id probabally go without a cv in the rear the stocker isnt cv'ed factory... if your angles are more than stock cut off the axle perches and rotate your pinion angle with some new perches. also did you hae the rear wheel bearings checked and have you check for a bent axle. ive also seen water get into tires causing the same thing. but since you had them shaved im assuming it was off the rim...

Just a note when they shave your tires they do them on the wheel and on the truck at low speed with a machine. When they are done they mark the lug in relation to the valvestem and then pull them off to balance them on another machine. When they put them back on it has to be exactly where they came from and the valvestem needs to be in the same place for each individual axle. The concept is that tire has been trued for that axle and if it is moved to another one the process has to be started again. The larger the tire you run the more this becomes evident. I'm sure you've seen that new F350 with 49" swampers running down the road looking like the bed was going to bounce off.

I wouldn't rule out the CV but I also have a bent axle (no jumping) and it bounces pretty bad between 45 and 60mph and now my bilstien has let go on that side.

When I had my old Swampers shaved, it was done on the truck with a machine that rolled the tire and shaved off high spots (up to 3/8" on one of the tires). For balance, they just pulled off all the weights and it was pretty close.

when my tires were shaved, the wheels came off the truck.

I used to run just a regular NON-CV driveshaft, but the operating angles were big, and I had vibes. so I went to the CV style shaft.

Yeah they pulled the weights off and shaved them and then put them on the balance machine and replaced weights as needed to fine tune things. I watched the whole process and it was very time consuming but interesting and I learned, so it was worth it.

You can deal with an out of round tire but when you get up to 36" it can not only be annoying but costly on suspension parts.

To the OP I hope it's a CV because in my neck of the woods it's cheaper to replace a bent axle or get your tires shaved.

Not on that rig, but on a lot of the later ones the rear shaft has a CV. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

A CV is the way to go for minimal vibes on a lifted rig as long as your angles are set up right.

10-4 on that Erik. My angles are perfect. I've checked them 101 times. It's gotta be the shaft's balance or the CV is worn out. I'm awaiting what the powertrain place is going to say for a verdict.
