Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi I'm new to the Toyota world. I've been in the diesel performace world for the past year or so (still am). I just purchased a fairly clean 85 Yoda with 7inches of overall lift.. (Has 3" body that probably wont be staying don't like body lifts much...). As the topic implies what do I need to know as far as flat towing this vehicle? I have read to remove the rear drive shaft and make sure the front hubs are unlocked. I have multiple trailers but the homeowners association is on my butt about having a trailer in the driveway. I'm in college and like to have something to tinker on here and then tow it ho,e to use my shop for larger projects.

Also what do I need to look for in a cheap tow bar? I'm not too worried about it pushing my truck around too much will be using my 3/4 dodge cummins to pull about 8100# dry.

1 specific question that comes to mind is steering?

Thanks
Brian (Toyota newbie)

So just remove the rear drive shaft and make sure that the front hubs are unlocked. What about the steering? Locked unlocked? What about tow bar selection? Just the cheap A frame type? Thanks Again

I got one of these from JC Whitney:

Its about $130.

I've never flat towed mine, so not sure on the steering, but this forum thread says to unlock it.

You will want to leave the key in the ignition in the unlocked position, otherwise you wont be able to turn the truck.

If you are going to do a lot of flat towing, you might want to consider swapping in a full floater rear axle kit with hubs, then just unlock the hubs when you tow it.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

Body Damage is Cool
I flat tow my Runner frequently, using the same bar in Rogers pic.
Disconnect the rear drive shaft, t-case in 2-HI, tranny in N, hubs unlocked, and steering UNLOCKED.
