I wanted to thank everyone for all the great info on the TC replacement. I am half way through and have a few questions. I got the cover off and see the TC has ground down the cover. It has not gone through to the water jacket. So, can i use it again? And what has happened to all the material removed from the cover. I know it has gone to the oil pan and poossible filtered and or gone back through the engine.

I hope to be able to put it back together this weekend, thanks for all the help.

Mike

When mine did that I intially put the old cover back on but ordered a new timing cover (I left the head on that time). About 2 years later when doing a HG replacement a slapped a new Timing cover on there. Think it cost about $50. I think the shavings from the chain-on-cover will be tiny, hopefully stuck to the drain magnet. The timing chain guide pieces are in the bottom of the pan though!!

Did you pull the pan and get the plastic pieces out?

You really do need to pull the pan to get the pieces out, or you'll be doing the job again... only this time to put bearings in because they burnt up from one of the pieces plugging an oil passage....

x 3; pull that pan! The drain plug boss sticks up, and does NOT allow about 1/2" or so of the oil in the bottom to be drained; filter change is also in order.

Trick on the TC cover. If you have some solvent, and the cover is removed, pour it onto the inside where the wear area is, if it leaks thru the other side, into the recycling pile it goes.

Cheapest ones are from EB.

I installed a new timing chain cover, ordered from EB. I did pull the pan. It was work but it wasn't too bad. Started it up tonight, it fire up right away, then started surging. After awhile the surging stopped. I will look at it again tomorrow. I need to clean it up and check for leaks, set the timming and adjust the values. Hoping it will run for another 50-100k. It has 202k on it now.

The 22RE is kind of funny about its coolant level. Make sure the front end of the truck is slightly higher. Turn ON your heater, run the truck for about 20 minutes with the radiator cap OFF. This burps the air out of the system. Make sure it's topped off.

You might have to tweak the TPS a little bit afterwards; new to you truck.
