Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 93 rodeo has been shaking badly and riding rough as hell lately and I havnt been able to figure it out. I changed shocks, wheel bearings, upper and lower ball joints, front sway bar bushings and it was still shaking like crazy going down the road. So today I put jack stands under the rear end and let the wheels spin in the air and noticed the wheels were not spinning straight and had a slight wobble to them. I sat in the truck and got it up to highway speed and I could definately feel and see the wheels were out of shape. Could this just be the tires or wheels out of round, or do I have a bigger problem? Any help would be great.

Glad we can help. We love it when people are grateful of the the FREE advice they receive around here. Especially since that advice you get is from individuals who are nice enough to spend their free time helping people they don't know, or have never met.

In the future, I suggest you wait a bit more than 12 hours for an answer or if you need one sooner, take it to a mechanic an PAY them to diagnose your problem.

Good Luck,
Michael

FWIW I am just seeing this post for the first time, didn't get on line last night <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Make sure the wheel studs are not stripped, that is a fairly common problem when shops use impact wrenches to put on lug nuts.

A tire can be out of round, sometimes a belt can break or separate and the tire will get the equivelant of a hernia, but usually not both tires at the same time.

What kind of wheels do you have? Steel wheels can get bent, but a cast aluminum wheel will usually crack before it bends that much.

If the whole axle was bent you wouldn't get a wheel wobble, the wheels just wouldn't track straight with each other...might get a shimmy of some kind though.

Just to echo what Steve said, i doubt its a bent axle, you've got something else going. And besides, those axles are pretty stout, you'd know it if you did something to tweak it.

Sorry if I was impatient. I am very grateful and think this is a good forum and I get a lot out of it. I have stock aluminum wheels and the tires have high and low spots around the outer edge of the tires. Im gonna put a new set on and see how it goes. Thanks for the help.

I always love Michaels posts. He really is a nice guy. He is proboably just a little on edge while in school. I would also check your driveshaft for being balanced. I knocked a weight (tore off on a rock) loose while wheeling and it had a nasty shimmy until I got it rebalanced. I now have a slight shimmy from a bent rim.

High and low spots are usually due to bad shocks. I see that you already changed your shocks but the damage could already be done. I am surprised that tire wear would turn into a bad vibration while driving.

I agree with the others that the bend axle housing sounds unlikely.

Getting it in for an tire balance and alignment might show you the problem.

My amigo had a bent rear axle. The left rear tire had a noticible wobble to it. Funny thing is you didn't feel it at all. It had been in an accident before I bought it and hit on the left rear quarter. I changed it out and you couldn't tell the old axle was bent even by looking down at it.
