Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi All,

I have a question about the automatic transmission and torque converter in the Gen3. Mine is the 3.2 DiD, but I am pretty sure the transmission/TC must be the same as the ones you guys have Stateside.

The issue is this: When starting the car from cold first thing in the morning, drive is not immediately available. If the transmission is immediately shifted to Reverse after the car is started in order to back out of the garage, it takes a couple of seconds before the vehicle wants to move. This only happens when the vehicle is started from ice cold and not on subsequent starts during the day. I hope I have explained this adequately...

What causes this?

Is it normal? If not, what could be wrong?

The car has been doing this since I bought it in August last year, i.e. the behaviour has not changed or become more noticeable.

Regards

Gerrit

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi again,

I posted my question on the Pajero 4WD Club of Victoria Forum and received the following reply, which I thought I would share:
Quote
Normal. Takes a few seconds to pump the tranny oil around. I find if I leave mine idling just long enough for all the dash warning lights to go out and then put it in gear it goes straight away.

Seems like I need not worry... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I find that the same is true on my 2003, I basically do the same thing he does.

I do not have that problem. Have you checked the fluid level?

My levels are good, and it only happens whent the Temp drops to like 30F or less. We are only talking about 5 seconds or so. Probably better for the tranny not to start and go before the starter has even spooled down anyways, but sometimes your in a hurry you know.

Yip, mostly it is not an issue, unless if your intended use is as a getaway vehicle (as one of the guys on the Aussie forum said) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
