hey there, new here, i must say the info on this site's really second to none. You guys really know your stuff, and its been a great help to me over the past few days. I burnt a valve out on my 92 p/up last week, so the past few days ive been ripping apart the engine (a real pain in the ass, i never want to do this again). i have one problem so far...on the crankshaft timing pulley seen here:
[Linked Image]
It says that theres a mark for tdc and for the belt (makes sense). now on mine i pulled it off and for the life of me cannot find anything other than the tdc mark(i marked it on the top the cog in the pic). now i was hoping that it would all line up fine when i put it back together again, but i dont really want to rip that apart just cuz its out a tooth or two, so i was hoping one of you guru's out there would know a random fact like where in relation the tdc mark the timing belt mark is. i would greatly appreciate it. thanx a bunch

I don't know much about 3slows... but if you look on page 10 does that help? Looking at the 3rd pic down it doesn't seem that the mark is on the pulley itself but on a washer like thingy... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
good luck!

thanx, but theres no mark whatsoever on my washer thingy, but the pic does make it look like its supposed to be on the very bottom, thus, unless im told better, ill do that.....

If I'm understanding you correctly, you just want to put the belt on with the marks givin on the belt? That does not exist, if you put marks on it yourself before you remove it you can get it re-timed with looking at only this. You should replace the belt anyway, make sure the crank is at tdc, both cam sprockets at tdc, get the belt on, (a little tricky), revolutionize the motor manually to be sure everything still lines up.

If you need more, ask, there is a good trick to getting the timing belt on after only two or three tries perfectly.

OK, I'll ask: What's the trick? I'm replacing my timing belt soon.

yeah ive got a new timing belt, with marks, the problem is there's no mark on the crankshaft pulley for the belt to line up with. im probably worrying for nothing, as ill turn it over a few times to make sure it lines up, but i was just trying to take any guess work on my part out of the equation....

Line up the marks on the cam pulleys with the timing marks on the back timing cover, set the engine at TDC and your good to go.

Turn the crank only counter-clockwise about a tooth or two in distance. Now the crank and the crank only is just a bit before TDC. Put the belt on as best you can, as hand tight as possible anyway, and when you now turn clockwise, the slack gets used up by the pre-measure you just took.

After a revolution to see how close you are, repeat as necessary, either increasing or decreasing the amount of teeth that you sort of preload into the system.

This makes quick work of getting everything where it needs to be.

Very good tip. I thought I was doing something wrong when I had to do that! I kept putting the belt on, and the marks were not lining up.
