I have a 90' toyota and ive noticed that my rear diff looks like its leaking on the bottom of the pumpkin it looks the seal is broke and its just seaping out the bottom and when I let the clutch out I hear a squeaking noise and thats where i think where its comin from so if u have any input on what the best thing to do is or if you know where I can get a rear end send me a msg!! thanks nICk

Tighten the nuts on the studs holding the 3rd member to the axle housing for starters. If that does not work, drain the oil, pull the 3rd out, clean the flange surfaces and reseal with some good sealant and reinstall the 3rd.

First thing I'd do is try and tighten the nuts holding the 3rd member on. Could be loose and leaking. If not, you'll have to pull the 3rd to reseal it. Just use some black RTV to seal it up.

Check your fluid level, you could be low. If your too low, you could have damaged something. Put the truck on jack stands and put it in gear. See exactly where the sound is coming from.

i totaly agree check it while u got her out and see how much flid u lost first by pulling fill plug see if u can feel lube with ur pinky if not diff dammage may have taken place already ! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
also if seal did blow out take out breater fitting on top of axle and blow out with compresed air to make sure it's venting other wise it'll blow again or worse blow out axle seals <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> good luck shannon

its not that hard to re seal the third, its time consuming. gotta remove shafts, pull third, put back together, and reseal it, and bleed brakes.

Speaking of which. I've heard people say they can pull the axles out without removing brake lines. Any of you guys done this? I would think you would bend or kink the lines doing this. Would save a lot of time if you could do it though.

Easily done with the brake lines attached, but yes, you will bend them a bit. What you have to be careful of are the axle seals. Once the axles are pulled out far enough (IIRC ~ 1.5"?) you should support them somehow (wood, cinder blocks etc..)If you just let them hang under their own weight, you run the chance of bunging the seals.

Do that a few times and wind up with a cracked brake line. I take the extra few minutes and pull it all the way out.
The squeak may be the rear u-joint failing/running dry.
Jack it up and see if there is any excessive play in the pinion. Wiggle the drive shaft at the u-joint and see if there is any play. Tighten all assemblies as needed as said before.
