Silly threading question - fuel pump #787576 02/08/07 02:40 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I was replacing my fuel pump on my 258, and couldn't take off the old metal fuel line from the outlet of the pump. Like many parts I have, it was rusted together. Anyways, I figured that kind of stuff was easy to replace, so I broke it off.
Now I feel kinda dumb, because I can't figure out what kind of threading the outlet has. I was thinking I would just get a pipe thread to barb adapter so I could rubber-hose it, but I haven't found the right part.
I had measured the size of the opening and thought that would be the size of the adapter (first mistake). It measured about 1/2", and the part that came closest to fitting was a 1/4" NPT. Either the opening is just the tiniest bit smaller, or a different thread (what I'm assuming).
The pump is:

Would appreciate any help/recommendations.
Thanks!

What you are needing is a common part to be found at the race parts house. It looks just like the part you have now but the threads are the correct TUBING threads. I have used many of them in the past. Did you put a genuine TUBING erench on that thing before you fuxed it up? Or did you attempt to ues an open-end wrench on it? It should work just fine after installing the proper part in the pump.

Got a name for the part? I'm lazy and don't go to auto parts stores very often. I prefer to buy everything online when I can.

And no, I didn't use a proper tubing wrench. I wouldn't know one from a hole in the ground, no doubt. My 'shop' is pretty meager when it comes to tools, but eventually I'll fix that.

I'll go do some googling on 'tubing threads'.

It is a 'tubing fitting".. In a pinch get a short piece of new tubing With the fitting already on it at the local parts house and cut it to length then slip the hose on it and clamp the crap out of it..

Ps that is as much help as I give to lazy folks.

I see where the communication problem is now. It's not a tubing fitting, it's a female threaded outlet. Which is why I was referring to NPT (National Pipe Thread). I've done a lot of research on threads for a few weeks now, and since it doesn't appear to be NPT, I'm wondering if it's AN now.

BTW, the inlet is definitely a tubing fitting, but finding 1/4" hose and some clamps is definitely NOT a problem. (I have plenty spare)

What I have purchased because I thought at the time it had to be it was: a 1/2" NPT to 1/2" barb and 1/4" NPT to -4 AN barb (when I discovered that a 1/2" opening wasn't a 1/2" thread). So I know it's not 1/4" NPT or 1/2" NPT.

Also, if you look at the picture in the link, it's kinda deceptive, but the outlet isn't the barb looking thing at the top of the picture (near the bottom of the pump since the pic is upside down), it's the thing that looks like a nut on one of the two towers at the bottom. The inlet is of course next to it and is a barb (tubing fitting) at a 90 degree angle to the outlet.

Your link don't go where you think it does..
Your description is of a normal female tubing fitting.

It should be this image (without my fancy labels):

Anyways, I hit up a local parts store and they directed me to some do-it-yourself metal fuel tubing kits with connectors VERY similar to what was on my jeep.

Unfortunately, none were in the right size, but maybe if the connector was the right size it would have worked for me. The 5/16" was a little too big, so maybe I can find a 1/4" online.

We'll see where this goes.

Wehn I replaced the pump on my chevy a while back (it had a similar female fitting), I went to my local parts store and went in back and dug through all the parts bins of fittings until I found the right combination. I can't remember what it was today, but if it was me, I would just take the pump with me to parts store or the Tractor Supply store, and try parts until I found the right combination to get to what you need to connect to.
