Body Damage is Cool
I've been running those extra large PH8 oil filters on my '84 22R. Now that I am swapping over to a 22RE engine configuration and adding A/C will I still be able to use the big filter? I was looking at the donor vehicle and it looked a lot more crowded on the passenger side of the engine than I am used to. Hard to imagine getting a filter wrench or even a hand on that sucka. Although I don't have IFS so there is better access from the bottom. -- Matt

If you go in from teh wheel well - it's right there.
Just need long arms if you have 14" wide tires, lol.

This seems kinda crazy, but you prefer to reach it from teh top, you can... seems liek you can just remove the big intake hose at the throttle body and get that sucker out of the way... then reach down to it.

I would *think* the larger filter would be bad, just b/c of the bigger surface area - deceases total oil pressure?

it wouldn't decrease oil pressure, because it's not changing the size of the inlet and outlet holes.

i ran some of the big filters on my 22RE but it was too much of a hassle. i don't have A/C either.

I was assuming that "bigger" meant "more interior volume", meaning the oil has more space to fill. More space with equal fluid means < pressure, right?

Big filter or little filter pressure will stay the same. Big filter designed to take more volume (volume is different than pressure)because of more filter element surface area. Big engine=big filter. Thats why a diesel that has 16 quarts of oil in it has a huge filter.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Big filters will fit. 22RE w/AC, etc. It will fit fine. I ran a WIX 51515, basically same as the PH8 Fram units, on mine while I was waiting for the parts store to get the right block adapter for my relocation kit.

Unles the trucks are different from the 4 runner's, there is no way on the early models to reach the filter from the top of the engine. I reach mine through the wheel well.

I dont agree .. and here's why .

I believe it does affect oil pressure , and so did Toyota Canada .

back in the day /79 -- > , PH8A was the filter toyota Canada supplied to it's dealers for the 20r and then 22r&22re 's , untill we started seeing an abnormal amount of warranties . replacing chains because of tensioner failiers . as we know , the tensioner is the first thing to recieve oil in the system .

I dont remember the date , I think 84 ... toyota Canada disscontinued the larger filter , for the smaller Japan filter ... and reduced the amount of warranties .

I personally would Never use a larger filter .

Nope, Big filter does not reduce pressure. What happened is that Toyota added a check valve to the filter to prevent oil from draining out when the engine was turned off. Then when the engine is started the tensioner has slacked until the pressure builds, this is where the damage was happening. You have to be careful when you buy oil filters. The thread and seal might be the same size as you need but it may not have a check valve. I think the check valve is needed on basically engines that have filters mounted horizontally.
