Well my brother broke 2 axles and now my dad just broke something so the driver side axle shaft won't come out. So it's time to just pony up and convert to the 8in. Question is will it bolt on? We will be going from an axle over to an axle under setup. I'll remove the AAL and possibly go back to the stock shackle if it looks funny. We'll also have to redo the parking brake but that's no biggie. 5 lug to 6 lug will be annoying so we will have to figure out how to convert one side to the other or carry 2 spares.
If you don't remember, this is the 86 2wd that I lifted 5in (3in suspention & 2in bl) cut the fenders and installed 33x12.5s. The combination of 33x12.5s, 4.30s, soft locker, centerforce clutch, weber carb and EB crawler cam is just too much for the 7.5in axle to handle.
Plus if anyone has a full 8in axle sitting around AZ, please let me know.
Any info would be great. Thanks
Josh

I think there are some 2WDs w/ 8" rear axles. A buddy has an '85 2WD w/ an 8" rear, spring under and 5 lug.

Hello Josh, long time no post. I found this on car-part.com $100. Freight should run $75 to $100 on top of that. This is from a 1 TON 2 wheel drive. I am assuming 5 bolt lug, not sure on the ring gear/carrier though. Might wanna give them a call? Woot!
I called and they are pretty backed up right now. Really nice lady on the phone said she'd check to make sure it is still there and get a shipping quote to me prolly today maybe tomrrow due to a funeral.
Yep, haven't been posting much since the truck just sits now. Company car is just too easy to drive. Seems like every time I want to drive the truck I gotta charge the battery and change the oil. Gets kinda expensive to take it out for an afternoon. I've also been rather sick for the last 6mos. Dr might have it figured out but running around in the cold forest hasn't been high on the list of things to do. That and laying in the snow to change the oil.
I still have the same tank of gas in it from June... of 05... Good thing its premium from mobil with stabil in it. It started and ran just fine in November when I last had it out. Prolly should go tank it up soon.
Thanks for the lead! I was only looking in AZ but it makes sense to pay for the shipping when the cheepest 4wd one here in AZ is $350 and has 4.10s and many other issues.

8" 2wd rears aren't too hard to find, if you know where to look. every '78 or older 2wd truck i've seen has an 8" with 4.11 or 4.375 gears. as mentioned, the 1 tons had them as well with 4.10s or 4.30s, and oddly, 4 speeds seemed to have them, almost always with 3.08 gears.

Hey Josh,
good to see you on the board.
Yup, I swapped a 2wd 8" into mine so I could use the 3rd's from a 4wd. Since then I've converted to 4wd. I still have that axle though. Has 4.10's in it now. Now that I think about it, I changed it to a spring-over perch setup, so some finagling with the e-brake cables would be necessary. IIRC, the 4wd axles are not the same width as the 2wd 8" axles so swapping the axle shafts may not work to maintain the 5 lug pattern. I haven't measured the axles themselves, but I have one of each and can do that if you'd like.

Grrr...
Was wondering why they never called me back...
Said they won't ship to a residence, semi-truck would show up and expect a forklift. Then again, my dad got the longblock engine off the semi by himself that EB shipped me. The truck driver wouldn't lift a finger to help so my dad did it himself.
Any ideas?

Josh How about carrying the spare of your choice and one onboard aluminum 5 to 6 or 6 to 5 adapter ring?
