This past month I have developed a slow leak on the Accumulator Piston Cover. And last Saturday I had the Piston and Snap Ring replaced. The Dealer that did the work screwed up and didn't put the Snap Ring in all the way. Took it back Monday (only drove it 10 miles total like this) and the guy that did the service wasn't there and they proceded to put the Snap Ring in place by any and all methods (read: prybar and socket <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />). Well they got it in but now I have no Fourt gear. The transmision shifts fine throught the gears and makes no sounds and doesn't throw any codes. But when coming up to speed the tranny will shift into 4th and then right back to 3rd, no mater what driving condition. First suspect was fluid, they said it was full but in fact was 1.25qts low, but now is topped off. This didn't solve anything. While adding the fluid I noticed that they had bent one of the lines to/from the cooler also. Its seems they used it as the support for prying first off. The tube is not totaly kinked but maybe enough to restrict flow.

So the question. What could be the culprit? Did they put the Accumulator Piston in wrong? Is the tubing affecting the shifting? Or is it electrical, some sensor saying shift out of 4th or disengaging the torque lockup?

Also just so everyone knows why I don't take it back to the dealer. I test drove the truck with the technician and service manager. After them saying it was perfectly normal to cruise around at 65mph/3400rpm, I literaly started to scream at them. I could not beleive that lack of knowledge and help I got. The tech had to ask me how to check the fluid after looking for a dip stick. And the service manager asked me if it was the 1-2 Accumulator or the 3-4. They are never getting there hands on my truck agian.

Any Help or hints will help.

And people ask why I do my own mechanic work with my salary...

I will be tackling this same job in a week or so.

Being a Datsun mechanic in my younger days has always paid off, even if it was a "dirty" job!

My last comment is; One should never turn their nose up at someone who is doing something because they like doing it, and seeing the work is done right.

Body Damage is Cool
If its the 4L30E , make sure you replace both O-rings in there.I went through this not too long ago where all the sudden I was spewing out tranny fluid and couldn't find the cause. It turns out the second O-ring was damaged and wasn't sealing properly. There is an inner and an outer O-ring , so make sure both are in good shape before you put them in , and make sure it goes in nice and straight , or you could damage one of them.

With mine , the only time it would spray out was at high speed , 50 MPH and above , then it would spray everywhere which made it hard to find the leak.At first I thought one of my hoses had come off , thats how much was there from the high pressure spray.
