Ok the t-150 3spd in the '72 just isn't going to cut it. Last summer I picked up a T-176/300 4spd with the idea of swapping that into the Jeep.
Now New England wheeling is mostly narrow, steep, rocky trails, so a stick is difficult to work without an ebrake and I have an opportunity to trade for a tf-999 auto.
I've never owned an auto nor worked on one. So yeah with my limited years of experience I dont know much about this swap. The 176 was a direct swap except the drive shafts. What am I going to need for this swap? I'm keeping my d300 tcase, and I'll have the bellhousing etc.
Thanks in advance for answering this sad question

I can't answer the question about driveline length differences, but that's a minor expense.
I can say that I have a TF999 and D300 behind an AMC360, and it has performed great for me. I have 4.56 gears and lockers in both diffs, with 35" tires. Installed a CV joint in the front of the rear drive shaft.
It's been rock-crawling quite a bit during Kentucky trips, and I like the combination. The auto is a lot handier than a manual trans. I don't have quite the compression braking with the auto, but it's not bad in low range, 1st gear. I installed a ratchet shifter so it'd be easier to change tranny gears without having to look at a quadrant.
I'd make sure your brakes are up to snuff. I installed a Chevy 1/2-ton power brake system on my CJ.

I have the TF999 in my CJ and use it as a daily driver plus it sees a fair bit of trail action. This time of year it,s mostly snow [usually 2 feet deep approx] in local sand pits and also a rocky trail when I can get out to it. The auto is pretty nice. Heat is the enemy, put an extra cooler on it and a trans temp gauge is also good. Also make sure you install the trans kickdown linkage and adjust it properly, the TF trans need that to work properly. I bought a Lokar kickdown cable from Summit Racing and it is real nice. It,s listed as a TF904/999 piece. Oddly enough, I too have a spare T176 that I,m hanging onto in case the auto dies.
84 CJ7 304 HEI 35 BFG,s rear dana 60 with detroit locker,Viar compressor, fibreglass body, 2 1/2 spring lift, TF999auto, Warn 8000 winch, Plus a cool little trailer on 35,s. JEEP stands for just empty every pocket

quit being a sally and drive like a man, most of my club (new england based) drives stickshifts, and enjoy having them, i dont like to drive an automatic, nevermind wheel it. either learn how to drive or come up with a bewtter excuse. ive got some help for you along with the flame, http://www.redrock4x4.com/shop/products/263.html check it out, it allows you to throttle up with your hand, keeping your foot on the brake. easy to get used to, and keep the stick!

Good response!!! But I do have to say, I have never had a problem holding onto my beer or my gf, when I can manage to keep one around, when driving my manuals, it just takes a little more quick thinking on where to stash something, when the $h!T hits the fan. )
