Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
This started happening about two or three months ago. I started to notice that the clutch engagement point was unusually low to the floor, and the shifter was pretty stubborn getting into gear. This only happened when the engine was cold. After driving the truck for about 20 minutes or so it eventually got back to normal.
I noticed during the last month or so as the weather here started getting much colder that it has become much worse. The clutch is very soft and engages about one inch from the floor. It also has been sticking to the floor after being pressed and will pop back out after a second or two. It's impossible to shift gears with the clutch pedal pressed in while the engine is running. Trying to put the truck in reverse it grinds, so I have to shut it off then put it in reverse and then start it back up and then release the clutch.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem might be? For what it's worth, my truck is not a daily driver. 10-20 miles per week at most. Thanks in advance for any advice.

replace the clutch cylinder and slave. be done with it. usually if one is going the other is not far behind. it is hard to tell which one is failing. or bleed the thing, check the fluid. then replace. it is just like bleeding the brakes.. or as I like to do, go to the local vets office get a 60cc syringe. over fill the rez. crawl under the truck. put a good finger full of grease around the bleed screw. loosen and pull 60 cc of fluid through it. if there is fluid all over it,, replace. I bleed my own brakes this way every time I take them apart. the syringe is like a 1.25 and a bit of vacume tube. don't bother saveing it. the fluid kills the syringe.

Second the motion. Had same problem. Mine was the master cylinder, Fluid all over the carpet below the peddles. Put on a Chinese knock off master cyl. for $28 CAN. (came with resevoir). 15 minute job. Slave cyl was a chinese knockoff aswell for $12 CAN. another 15 minutes work.

I checked the clutch reservoir and it was empty. I put some new Dot 3 brake fluid in it and started it up and it helped some. The clutch pedal sprung back and didn't really stick. Not 100% though. Am I naive to think that this alone will do the trick?
When you say change the master cylinder, are you talking about the one for the brake as well or just the clutch??

clutch.. sounds like you need to bleed it now. there is a screw on the slave cylinder. just like the brakes.

If the reservior was empty you need to bleed the clutch MC for sure now. Because the clutch reservior is so small I found it hard for one person to bleed the clutch. Easiest way I found for one person to bleed the clutch is to gravity bleed it. There's a slave cylinder for the clutch on the bell housing of the tranny (pass. side). Loosen the bleeder and let the fluid drain into a bucket or oil pan. Use a tube over the bleeder. Stand at the master cylinder reservior and add fluid as the level goes down. Slow at first but once the air is bled out it will start to drain pretty fast. Make sure you don't let any air get into the master cylinder. Once you can't see any air draining from the slave cylinder close off the bleeder and top off the reservior.
Start by bleeding the clutch. That may be all you need. But if you have fluid leaking inside the floorboard or the pedal starts getting erratic again replace both the master cylinder and the slave cylinder at the same time as suggested.

Why would he need to bleed the brakes if it was the clutch MC that was empty???????
Check the firewall behind the dash (inside behind the clutch pedal)to see if fluid is leaking down there. If it is replace the clutch MC and slave cylinder.

I will look into this tomorrow. I can tell you though that there is no leaking anywhere inside the floor by the pedals as far as I can see. Bone dry...

I will try bleeding the MC first. If that doesn't work, where can I get a new clutch MC and slave? Are they expensive at the dealer? I had made an appointment to take my truck to the Toyota dealer tomorrow morning to check out my problem, but I don't feel like getting raped if this is something I can do myself. I was reading my Haynes manual last night and think replacing both the clutch MC and slave is something I'm capable of doing. I just don't know where to get the parts. Thanks.

Try rockauto.com for the parts. Good prices and great service with no screwing around. Autopartswarehouse.com might also have the parts but they frequently tell you they have parts in stock and charge you for them immediately. Then you get a call from them that they don't have your parts and have to credit your account back the money, usually a week later. Highly annoying if your ride is down waiting for parts.
