Getting the Wheeling Fever
My son just purchased an 89 Raider V6/AT. The transfer case will not shift, as in the shift lever will not move. He bought it from a fella that never put it in 4WD...yeah NEVER. But the rest of the "RIG" is in great shape. Don't suppose the fix for this is as easy as pull the lever out squirt some ATF on the parts and away we go? The tranny works great otherwise. Thanks for your help! Terry

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just went through almost the exact same thing with my son's '89 Montero. I could not get the transfer case shifter to move unless I really pushed hard, then it would barely move. What I ended up doing was removing the center console from around the shifter, then removed the floor plate and boot, which exposed the shifter linkage. Sprayed a good quality penatrating fluid right where the barrel enters the transfer case. Really soaked it. Then I moved it to the center and worked it side to side for several minutes. Finally started working it back and forth after spraying some more. When I was done, you could move the shifter with 2 fingers!
Of course, it goes without saying, that the transmission needs to be in Neutral and all preload removed from the drive train for the transfer case to shift.

Ya might want to change your Xfer case lube after that. No doubt you got some penetrant down in there. Depending on how much....

They are very balky to shift when the driveline has ANY load. I like to be in neutral, foot off the brake, to shift it. Even with the ebrake on, it's tough. Try turning the truck upside down and shake it to get lube on the shifter forks and rails....

It took one of mine a few weeks before it moved smoothly.
if I recall there was a bolt/grub screw in line with the shifter where it enters the case that I sprayed in. That got it to free up quicker.
