Took the 98 trooper to the local fix-all shop. No time and no garage to look at it myself, plus its been bitterly cold. Anyway, its a sotf system, that won't engage. Mechanic said the 4x4 switch was falty and shorted out and took out the controller. I have a hard time believing that a switch that has not been damaged will SHORT out and take out a controller. Has anyone heard of this?

The SOTF actuator is a pretty common problem...lots of discussion out there on it.
Check out the FAQ: http://isuzufaq.ibctech.ca/#faq68

So why is this such is mis-diagnosed problem from reputable mechanics?

Well...it is a pretty common problem seen here on the Isuzu discussion boards from around the country and the world...meanwhile the average mechanic probably doesn't see that many Isuzus at all.
